LNs are not crafted by expert writers or storytellers. They are usually slightly-above-average fanfic tier of literature. If you dont enjoy them for the trash thy are so that you can see what happens to some characters you enjoyed, then you should stay away from them.

It's both. LN are simple and closer to picture books, and fan translators are far from capable to translate a book no matter how simple it is. The work of a book editor is fucking loaded and nowhere near as some translator who only translate speechbubbles and subs, which I why I never read fan translations of books. It's hard to make big descriptive parragraphs interesting in another language.

Bakemonogatari was the only LN i read that seemed passable for "novel" and even then things are getting lost due to Nisio's hard on for wordplay. That said Hikaru ga Chikyuu ni Itakoro was the latest one i tried to look at and its actually got a pretty good translation that doesn't come off as a recap.

LN's in general are shit though and I cant why anyone would want to read shitty translations of them.
