All Coliseum scenes are flashbacks with sepia filter, I think.

I loved the original series, but honestly I wasn't a fan of the character designs. Sometimes they went so far into cartoony territory I felt they took some if the weight out of the story. Not all the time, just sometimes.

I wish the new one didn't look quite so bland and I hate CG Hermes but I'm not down on it for "omg they changed the design!"
