Technically that doesn't have to be a retcon. Maybe they hopped in the hot air balloon after Wall Maria fell and everyone was getting gathered up to go on the "reclamation" mission. They told Armin they were leaving early, he thinks they died in the recovery mission, but they really died via MP murder. As for Armin mentioning to Eren in the anime a few years before Wall Maria fell that his parents were planning on leaving the walls "soon", could easily be explained away with some setbacks that caused them to delay flying it. First of all, I made Colossal titan. And then I thought “What if colossal titan is a human who has weak-hearted and calm eyes, then what kind of character would it be?”. So I made Bertolt. Bertolt is the only character that the design of the titan came first, and then the human form.

Annie Leonhart

She is a small, but highly decorated character. Her hairstyle is based on photos of Avril Lavigne taken by paparazzi. Her name is a joke, like “She is a girl, but her name is ‘Bro’(※In Japanese, ‘Annie’ and ‘Bro’ have the same pronunciation)” And it can be another reason that I liked the nickname “Annie” of the character who appeared in the drama <Kisarazu Cat’s Eye木更津キャッツアイ>. And I combined “LeonHart” to show her inner strength. I thought the name is edgy, so it’s cool.

ok so because i actually cried this morning over this i’m just gonna

i’ll say this for like the 700th time, but i was never appalled by erwin’s death. i also realize i came in at a unique time–i started reading the manga in october 2016, so i didn’t have the years of involvement with the character. i’ve always seen his death as means to ignite levi and hange’s story further–what will these two characters do in his absence? this man that has given them so much purpose and consideration–what will they do without him?

i was ok with it up until chapter 90. the timeskips pissed me off. because instating a timeskip invalidated the choice of who got the serum at all. we didn’t get to see how the characters responded to erwin’s absence. we didn’t even get to see how armin used this new power. in the end–they won regardless of who was even alive.

it felt like a slap in the face.

but with this new character directory, it’s clear that we can’t be looking at the macro–we can’t be looking at what erwin’s death meant for humanity and for the survey corps. we can’t be looking at his life and what his character and personality means to us and the people around him.

it’s much smaller than that. much more central to just one character. we need to look at this on a micro scale.

the canon reason for erwin’s death is that levi loved him too much.
there is no other way to look at this. whether romantic or not, whether you ship it or not–this reason is canon.

First, Marcel. Then Marco. Then he fails to beat Zeke to go rescue her. Reiner keeps fucking things up for Annie.

levi’s decision was always a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t”. he loses either way. on one hand, he can revive erwin, but then he will become the demon flocke says he is. on the other hand, he fucking loses erwin. eren and mikasa would lose armin–damning him to being a shifter, a monster, and disregarding his choice to sacrifice himself to the greater good (just like erwin)–was better than losing him.

we have flocke and hange and even levi telling levi that he needs to do this. this is the right choice. there is nobody else that can bring victory. he is the only choice.

erwin is a man that had a dream. lived the dream. strived for the dream. and he picked up levi and brought him along. levi couldn’t understand at first when he discovers erwin’s selfishness–erwin was supposed to be this unattainable figure, a man that operated outside of normal human desires. but he was a person just like anybody else. in that moment, levi saw that even though they had always had equal respect, they had also always been both completely human–they had been drunk on something.

erwin was a dreamer.

and levi had the syringe to his veins when erwin raises his arm.

asks his father how he knows what the titans are.

erwin was a dreamer until the end.

and what levi does can only be considered love, because it trumps his duty as a soldier to let him die. if levi was a soldier in the that moment, erwin would be alive.

flocke says that eren, mikasa, and levi could not give up the precious something to them. eren and mikasa could not lose their childhood friend.

levi could not lose erwin’s humanity.
it wasn’t just losing erwin. it wasn’t just about letting him rest. it wasn’t just about keeping him human. it was about keeping erwin as himself until the very end.

it was about giving erwin mercy.
