This is why I hate chase arcs like this with a main group that constantly has someone splinter off, get a rushed introduction to some throwaway villains (who get thrown away wow big surprise). The fight somehow leaves the splinter character out of commission... cut back to main group and... it's super unclear whether time has passed or it's now running concurrent with the fight we just saw.

Stack these on top of each other and you have a total mess of pacing. It also makes the main group feel totally incompetent because you have to trudge through soooo much and all along they seem to be making no progress.

The forest ambush had multiple fights but it avoided this.
