Issue with Nero, you cannot play her as the same type of character as Arthuria unless you're retarded. Even trying to play Arthuria as perfect is fucking retarded, but its slightly easier to swallow at times. At this point she's kinda like Seig, she exists to bring everyone else nearby down as they slowly are drawn into jacking her off at all times and calling her a saint.

She was fine when she was a haughty fallible failure of an emperor, but she tried hard and was genuine. A person who was not fit at all to be ruler but she tried. For story, yes. Absolutely. It's one of the best Fate entries, being in Stay Night and Zero ranks for me. Your opponents have interesting servants and personality, with their own little character arcs that made me actually not want to kill some of them. The protagonist have a bit different personalities that can affect your experience too, the male being a tsukkomi type, while the female is a cutely stubborn type.

For gameplay, it's okay. As stated before, the dungeon parts are kind of boring. But the information gathering bits and the events you encounter in dungeons are interesting enough to make up for that. This Grail war is in a tournament format, so at the end of each "week", you fight an enemy servant, and they're hype and fun as fuck.

You get to choose your own servant and that affects the characters you get and the gameplay.

First you have Saber, Nero. Kind of the "beginner mode". She starts out stronger than the other two, and raising her easiest as you'll mostly be only putting points in Strength and using basic attacks. Her personality and backstory are frankly just kind of meh at best, shit at worst. She's getting a lot of hate for that recently, though I do think most of that is exaggerated. She's not terrible, just kind of disappointing.

Then there's the Archer, Emiya. He's kind of the "normal" mode. He uses physical attacks, but also has to use Magic, so some MP management is required. He's really fun to play as, looks the best, and is Emiya, so naturally the "coolest". My personal favorite of the three, in both gameplay and as a character.

Then there's Caster, Tamamo-no-Mae. She's the "hard mode" in that she starts out the weakest and raising her is hardest, as she relies of magic and MP management, but she also ends up being the strongest if raised properly. As for personality, she's fun. She remains a playful "wife" to the MC, and can be the meanest and evilest thing to everyone else.

Give it a try if you like the franchise.

If you picked female MC, pick Archer > > > Saber > Caster. Archer and female MC have pretty fun interactions, where both try to be out smug each other constantly. Saber's fake attitude is second, but after a huge power gap between her and Archer. Caster with female MC is the most boring, as she doesn't give female MC much chance to be smug. So pick Archer, but if you insist on playing with a new character, go with Saber. Avoid Caster.

For male MC, go with Caster > Archer > Saber. Male MC's relationship is better with Caster as he plays a pretty nice tsukkomi to her evil antics and the interactions improve a lot by this. Archer is second for being a nice "bro". His relationship with Saber is the most boring one because takes his ability to be a nice tsukkomi from him, as Saber is too stubborn to listen. So with Caster you get an original and fun character for male MC, but using a caster isn't something noobs can do, so if you can't handle that, pick Archer. Avoid Saber.

As for the "balance", come on now, anon. That's pretty much the equivalent of the skills that are "strong. but hurt to use". Or telling a wounded protagonist that he shouldn't move or it'll hurt. Pain literally the worst kind of "limitation" put on a power, as it can be and is ALWAYS ignored when it counts. I can't count the number of times pretty much every character, including Shirou himself, just put with it. It limits or balances nothing.
