They love their horribly outdated ways of doing everything: writing, religion, business, family, etc. Getting rid of kanji would be getting rid of their culture. The other reason is that Japanese has a LOT of homonyms. Try looking up こうか　in a Japanese dictionary. Getting rid of kanji would make a lot of sentences harder to read and more ambiguous. Kanji are kind of retarded, but I don't know that the alternative is better.

But no, the Moonabi scooped up the crew into its maw the moment they jumped into the water. I could hear their screams as it feasted. The terror was just too much, and I blacked out as I jumped over the side of my vessel.

I awoke on the shores of the island, my leg missing. The Moonabi was gone. My entire crew had been consumed. My ship was lost. Everything was lost.

I can never forget the horrors of the Moonabi. The smell lingers even now, as if the beast is trying to force me to consider suicide.
