No one's expecting any sort of 1-to-1 manga-to-anime adaptation you fucking goober, and everyone's well aware of the prohibitive costs of animation. I thought the 90s Berserk was a perfectly competent adaptation -- despite obvious budgetary limitations, it was well directed, individual shots looked nice, the music was phenomenal, etc. Approximating the quality of that series wouldn't be at all difficult today, especially with the far greater time- and cost-cutting techniques/technologies available to animators.

There was no real reason Berserk 2016 had to turn out like it did -- it was just handled by a team of incompetent boobs.

Problem is the manga is only going to progress slowly. All berserk fans know this and there are also a lot of people that believe it will never reach its ending. As much as Guts did get over the intimacy part when he lost his virginity to Casca, he still can't bring himself to allow a man to be in that position with him. Not to mention Griffith was a fucking wreck after they saved him.
Berserk has a lot forbidden love elements to it, Serpico and Farnese, Rosine and Jill, Casca and Griffith (because of her position as a soldier under his command, she could never fill the role of a woman for him), the king and Charlotte and even and Judeau and Casca, to a lesser degree.
Guts and Griffith is simply the biggest and most repressed one, it fuels Guts's rage more than anything, and is what made him different in Griffith's eyes, it was clear that Griffith did see the whole band as friends, in spite of what he said to Charlotte, as it was shown in his moments with the Godhand before he accepted to become one of them, he sees Guts as much more than friend/companion, hell, he said Guts made he lose sight of his fucking dream. That's why the first thing Griffith does after being reborn, is check if he still feels something for Guts.
