Combination of timing and rapid market expansion. When Dragon Ball was introduced in the early 2000s (Or late 90s, whichever) it was fucking everywhere. In the boom of popularity a lot of shit was picked up over the years; Ranma, Naruto, Inuyasha, FMA, Death Note, Chobits etc - There was a lot of variety but in the end I imagine having so many series running at same time eventually caused them to cannibalize their own sales since nobody could pick up all of them. Combine this with piracy and people just reading free scans online (Ongoing series could be literal years behind the Nips because translations would only come out so often) and its not hard to see why the market imploded. I don't think there's been any new translated manga here since 2013.
