Nothing from the eva franchise will ever top NGE, there is no point to try. The rebuilds take themselves seriously but have no substance to show.

Hell even Kare Kano showed what Anno could do with anime if he stepped away from Eva. I love the original series and EoE, some of my favorite anime ever, but Anno needs to do something else.
