I enjoy the meta narrative more than the series itself.

The gist is that Toriyama wrote the original villain trio of dragonball into the plot of battle of gods as children and then wrote a comedic romance subplot with Bulma's son.

When adapting this for Tv Toei kept the Pilaf gang as kids but removed the romance subplot (kind of ruining most of the comedy of their involvement).

But Toriyama was so insistent on this pairing that he made the first anime original arc of the show about the time traveling Trunks from a separate timeline also hooking up with the Mai of that timeline. So Toei had no choice but to try to retroactively add it to the anime.
