Because shippers, active and outspoken ones at least, are hurting on the inside because their shit personalities make them undateable in the real world. Their OTP is usually a projection of their power fantasies. If their self insert character managed to win the object of their affections they see it as a validation to themselves. A way to feel like they achieved something in their otherwise mediocre lives.
