I just watched S1-S3 over the past week so I could watch AXZ with /a/. But I have a few questions about the series so far:

Why is GX considered to be so terrible compared to S1 and S2? It's not quite as good as the previous seasons, but I don't understand the sheer level of hate that GX seems to get from Symphogear fans.

When you had to wait for a week in between each episodes, the 2nd part of GX was really disappointing. For around 6 weeks it felt like Symphogear turned into a mediocre monster of the week show with bad animation and very annoying things happening like topdad, and that fucking bullcrap ending

The complete package doesn't feel as bad simply because you didn't have to wait so much and judge every episodes on their own merits, and they fixed the animation a bit as well.

The problem with GX is mostly that they introduce alchemy and a type of enemy to fight against, (eg. dolls, alchemists) but, instead of doing anything interesting with the new premise they fuck up by retreading character arcs from G and GX, and try to reintroduce more drama through the introduction of topdad. All this isn't including the screentime added through the extra additions to the main cast (Maria, Kirika, Shirabe), who you also need to develop as characters. Plus on top of that you have to develop villain motivations, and on top of that Last Action Hero returns which altogether creates a clusterfuck because GX was trying to do to many things at once.

Despite that, there are things that people really enjoy about GX. Shuttle suplex, Dolls (what little time they had), and the return of Last Action Hero, it's just a shame that they had to cram all of that together with topdad drama and a bunch of other stuff.

Symphogear makes a lot more sense when you realize it's a universe where passion is the path to power. Genjuuro already had a passion for action movies, but it was Kanade's death that pushed him to train and become as strong as he is(just compare how he looked before the concert and after). The fights for all of them were great in S1. I still think the early skirmishes between Chris and the other two are the best battles in the series.

The most disappointing part of G was how few of the geah vs geah fights measured up to the S1 standard despite that being the backbone of the season.
