The Zeta movie trilogy on the other hand is inferior to the TV series it completely changes some things including the ending and has a lot of jarring remastered footage

The way I see it, Kamille and Four's relationship is basically a tragic star-crossed romance, but within the context of botched ambitious post-humanist experimentation, and the chaos of war. They didn't show Four's mindfuck for nothing. People probably got bored of it because they watched Eva first, which is understandable because Eva cranked mindfuckery tropes to eleven. Not to mention that the romance might look like a soap opera borefest. The shit Zeta characters has gotten into, while seem ridiculous in Tomino script's way, are perhaps more realistic. Except for the plot-convenient Newtype awakening bullshit, of course. During the Cold War human mind experimentation did happen in secret. Discourses on mental illness (hysteria, psychosis, etc.) turned political and not only within the confines of psychiatry.

Been so long since I watched Zeta, though.
