I would imagine a higher quality sword would make both slicing and withstanding attacks easier, despite the mechanism of coating them in CoA haki being the same. I really hate haki. It doesn't feel like it fits the theme of the series and how previous fights/powers have worked. I mean CP9 had Rokushiki which kind of prepared for non-devil fruit powers like that, but haki just seems like a step too far.
Considering the early reliance on stuff like rubber > lightning in fights I always assumed haki was added because Oda ran out of ways to fight Logias and he just made up something universal.

I actually don't mind how Haki's been treated so far in WCI, it's allowed the fights we have seen to function clearly enough given the increasingly powerful opponents and their abilities in the story. In addition, it's been made clear that even with the presence of CoA haki, devil fruit users and unique power users can still make use of their abilities in creative manners, however they have to be mindful of the presence of Haki.

Some good examples of this can be seen during the major combat moments in the arc, including the Luffy vs Cracker fight, Katakuri at the tea party and Sanji fighting both Judge and Luffy. In each of these fights the use of haki didn't lend itself purely to a "who had the stronger haki" slug fest, instead it required for the use of haki to meet the strategy of each party involved and in doing show demonstrated how different individuals can combat each other in a world with such a variety of individuals and powers.

I think those weaknesses do still exist, they just have to facilitated by haki, which is a simple enough process when done correctly and doesn't lead to the need for constant lucky favourable match-ups. Instead, characters can be clever and make use of weaknesses, but still be capable of more basic fighting when necessary; the same true of the person their fighting too, as was the case with Katakuri throughout the tea party.

My one major issue with CoA is when characters just fully coat themselves in it. That's definitely where it becomes a bit tedious as it just invalidates much counter strategy if it can't be broken through. It should have a sufficient downside for its use, such as major stamina drain, similar to how Gear 4 works. That way it makes for increased strategic potential, e.g. forcing the opponent to keep the CoA up so they get tired, without getting hit in return.

It also makes sense on how the first three Admirals are so damn powerful despite being logias. Their abilities are horribly overpowered, even compared to the normal assortment of logias, and Akainu's haki is so strong he can negate other buso attacks and go back to using logia phasing for defense.

Precognition also helps prevent the series from going into speed power creep. This way you can dodge attacks without getting into teleporting wars like some other shonen do.

Big Mom falls to the ground with the others when she orders them to attack the strawhats but their attacks can't reach ceasar. Katakuri tells Perospero to help him ease the impact of the fall.
Big Mom throws Napoleon at the escaping group, but Brook who appeared on Yonji's back slashes the sword away. Out of anger she summons Prometheus and Zeus, but neither reacts. In a Flashback it turn out that during the Explosion, Brook had left Capone and already liberated their souls.

It's possible, but that would be another incredibly powerful addition to her already considerable range of abilities which would require a strategy specifically to deal with it, if and when the rematch happens.

I personally prefer the idea that Luffy suffers an immediate stamina drain from releasing Gear 4, teamed with his existing lack of rest and meat-refueling since being on WCI. However, if that does turn out to be another ability of Big Mom I'll look forward to seeing how it's dealt with as it'd make any form of drawn out close combat an incredibly dangerous prospect, on top of the other reasons for being anywhere near Big Mom being dangerous as is. Doubly so given Luffy's whole approach to fighting relies on stretched out limbs, which Big Mom could just grab and KO drain him through, should she have that ability.

Haki is basically Oda's way of justifying the superhuman shit that characters do in battle shounen. Yeah, they already could do superhuman stuff, but I think he was starting to feel like it was just shit he was making up as he went along, so he probably thought it'd be better to just say it outright that experienced individuals have found a way of raising the skill floor, basically.

Other than niggermode, every aspect of Haki is in clear response to the problems posed by upper tier combat in a battle shounen like One Piece. One Piece, remember, doesn't have any magic in it. In a series like Naruto or Hunter x Hunter, anytime something ridiculous happens, you can just say, "Oh, he was using chakra/nen," and the discussion ends there. In One Piece, things get pretty ridiculous - and they HAVE to get ridiculous in order to combat the equally ridiculous shit that your enemies throw at you.

They obviously will. They're also both in each crew's "middle" group. Daifuku being strong enough for Vito to mention, but not a Sweet Commander. They also both fight with what is essentially an inhuman clone of themselves.

If this is true, then this would probably mean Robin would fight Oven. Robin has had very few fights in the series, but Oda has always tried to pit her against enemies that are difficult for her to simply grapple and break. This usually means big, monstrous dudes, sometimes with multiple limbs. Oven doesn't fit that description (unless he can transform into a fucking oven, and after Big Father, I'm willing to believe Paramecias can do anything) but he is precisely the worst opponent for Robin, as merely spawning body parts on him will burn her.

I think this is great, but it does leave one to wonder if Compote will ever do anything (fight Carrot?) and also, I don't like the idea of Perospero fighting Brook, which is the next obvious match-up. Brook vs. a candy man just sounds boring. If Big Mom does go out to fight the Straw Hats, I hope Perospero stays behind to watch over Tottoland, so Brook can fight his real counterpart:

It's difficult to say if that matchup would be the case, or if it would even happen at all given the approach the story has taken away from straight up one on one fights. In addition, if Daifuku is just below Sweet Commander level then he's likely way above Franky's capabilities at present. He would likely have to go through a powerup when we next meet up with the whole crew, though I do think something to that effect is on the way, given just how completely outclassed Luffy was in comparison to Big Mom. It's also easy to forget how much his fight with Cracker favoured him, given Nami's presence and the vivre card likely offering her protection from any sort of Cracker aggression through King Baum.

Truth be told, I'm still thinking that Sanji will be his opponent. However, depending on if a powerup does happen in Wano, that could alter. Time will tell ultimately, but I do agree that I'd like to see Brook facing off against a swordsman on the crew, though I'm unsure who could fulfill that role and be of a similar enough combat aptitude to provide a good fight for the guy. His ice powers could make for an interesting way of approach Perospero as well, though again it's possible that it may still be a series of skirmishes when the two crews meet again.

I've also liked the idea that Compote, whilst being strong, is in the same boat as Perospero, whereby her abilities are more focused on infrastructure and utility over direct combat. The idea that Big Mom's first couple of children were tasked specifically with the development of Tottoland just appeals to me, even if there's nothing to suggest that's the case with Compote. Either way, it'd be nice to see at least one of the monster ladies do something at some point.

I just feel like - and judging by Luffy's words in the recent chapter, Oda does as well - that Luffy beating the Yonkou won't mean anything if it isn't a legit crew-on-crew battle. It's true Sanji isn't strong enough to fight a Sweet Commander, but Luffy isn't strong enough to fight Big Mom. None of the Straw Hats can take their similarly ranked counterparts in Big Mom's crew, so I don't see why you'd single Sanji out. It's the same with Kaidou. People who think Wano will be this all-out war against the Beast Pirates are going to be disappointed when they find out Kaidou isn't there and Nekomamushi probably won't show up either, because Oda needs to give Weevil something to do. Him and the shogun are the next primary antagonists; Kaidou and Big Mom have other shit to do and Luffy isn't strong enough.

All this ultimately boils down to how Oda chooses to approach the Straw Hat's combat development following this arc. The past few chapters have made it very clear that Yonko really are as terrifying as they are perceived to be and, as it currently stands, the Straw Hats as a whole simply can't match up directly. My stance is that any potential match ups and fights are likely to depend heavily on just how Oda approaches this in the coming arcs, given that eventually the Yonko will have to be taken out and all the information we current have points to Kaido being someone that will have to be defeated whilst dealing with the Wano situation.

For one on one battles on a relatively even group to occur between the Straw Hats and a Yonko's top crew there's going to have to be major development at some point soon as there's a considerable gap in combat capabilities to overcome from all the more capable combatants, including the middle and weaklings too. Such a drastic leap seems somewhat unlikely to me, though it's not impossible, so I'm more inclined to believe that whilst the Straw Hats will get stronger, they still won't be fighting direct one on ones, but more so skirmish against the major players when the time comes, similar to how Cracker was dealt with.

Wano is just one of Kaidou's territories and we already saw him go running about on a whim, so it's not like he's glued to it like Big Mom is to Tottoland (but won't be after this arc, obviously). Kaidou should be taken out after Big Mom. Luffy only said he'd take out Kaidou first because he presumes he'll be on Wano, but there's no good reason to think he's there more than anywhere else. As someone who thinks about One Piece every day, I don't feel this build up you're talking about at all. I see you guys talk about it all the time and I've been arguing against it for the past year. It's the same thing with all the people thinking Big Mom is going down now. I don't think you're really thinking things through. The Naruto/Sakura and Ichigo/Rukia shippers certainly felt like there was sufficient build up for their theories, but they were demonstrably wrong and simply chose to ignore it due to their own biases. And, in the end, they were hurt and lashed out, when really they should've learned something from it.
