>39 episodes of borderline incoherent homoerotic symbolism building up to nothing more than "I'm a strong independent black woman who don't need no man!"
Why is this so acclaimed, again?

Anthy's plotline was a metaphor for breaking free from an abusive/controlling relationship. There was also metaphors for several other topics during the series through other character developments.

It struck me more as a metaphor for breaking free from heterosexuality and the idea that what will bring a woman happiness is finding a prince to sweep her off her feet. Dios/End of the World is basically an embodiment of male oppression/dominance and came off as a metaphor for women being oppressed by the expectation that they should behave like princesses and find worth in serving a man. Utena shatters that archetype and gives Anthy hope of a gay life outside of social norms.
In other words it's feminist garbage that was at least twice as long as it needed to be.
it's the journey, not the destination

The journey dragged on way too long with tons of filler episodes. A good 60%-70% of the show felt like padding.

It's about how a chivalrous lesbian joins a school and influences the people around her, ultimately sacrificing herself to be forgotten by everyone except the person she was closest to. Large cast that gets a balanced amount of attention.

Utena's sexuality was ambiguous at most throughout the series, and she clearly had sexual desires for End of the World towards the end. She doesn't really go full lesbo until the final ep when she declares she wants to be a prince and fully understands what that means. The prince narrative of young girls falling in love with a prince who sweeps them off their feet is replaced with the narrative of Utena's sacrifice in Anthy's mind, which leads her on her own journey to find her prince at the end. So really the whole series is just the deconstruction of the cliche heterosexual female fantasy and its replacement with a lesbian equivalent.
The large cast is a plus, but I still felt that the entire black rose arc could have been skipped and they could have just focused on the core of the student council.

Could have been worse.
