I think the eight circle, where the jews are, is all about direction. They're marched in different directions while being whipped or have their heads twisted backwards so they can never move forwards. It's also guarded by the Minotaur.

What. He is very often referred to as one of the best villains in animation period and is generally recognized to be the best part of Wakfu.

Episode 2: Reg becoming a member of teh orphanage, The revival festival, Riko being allowed to read her mom's private letter. this episode ends with Riko and Reg disappearing into the Abyss in the spot Nat shows them.
Episode 3: Riko and Reg making their way down the abyss. We see them go down to the second layer, including the mimic bird things and their travels through the sheer drop in the third level. This episode ends was the exit the inverted forest and arrive at the Seeker camp, with the Ozen reveal being the teaser.
Episode 4: Ozen. This episode probably ends during or after Reg's fight with Ozen.
Episode 5: The rest of Ozen's mini arc, including the training and Riko's history. Ends with Reg and Riko going to the 4th floor.
Episode 6: Cup of Giants. Nanachi at the midway point. Ends with Reg's dream of finding Blaze Reap in the garden of flowers.
Episode 7: The rest of the Nanachi Arc. Rearrange certain things so that it ends with Bondrewd noticing Mitty's light fading.

I feel like this is a more realistic pacing structure. And it gives 6 episodes for them to cover volumes 4 and 5, which feels about right.

It's a story about adventure. The plot is finding what's around the corner as they work their way deeper through the abyss. The setting is incredibly well thought out. I really don't know what more it needs that wouldn't take away from the adventure. Of course the art and tone are most important, they convey the feeling of exploring a strange and dangerous land.

I thought it was obvious from the first few chapters onward it's not going to be a character study, and in no way I think a good story should be limited to this criteria. Even the way the world is built to make everything seem absolutely natural even though it's a pretty imaginative fantasy world is aspect enough for me to consider it a well built work. I guess it's just a matter of with what kind of mindset you adapt a priori.

I think that's part of the charm. The main characters are small children in an dangerous world going on a suicide mission into a mutant death pit thousands of feet deep. The fact that we only catch glimpses of the complicated ecosystem/social order helps re-enforce this childlike perspective. The gradual worldbuilding helps create a sense of character growth, at least for one of them that is.

One major flaw I have with this story is that Riko is goddamn useless. She's literally a plot device and very little more. I am not very impressed with her sense of agency and the fact that she relied heavily on Reg just to reach the lower levels in the first place annoys me. It would've been much more satisfying to watch her grow and overcome challenges rather than cry in the corner until her robo boy toy gets around to blasting her problems away.

I see a lot of people comparing Made in Abyss to Dante's inferno, which is a plausible analysis, but the show feels closer to Dragonball, especially given how useless Riko is.

She's hardly a fighter; it's surprising she helped as much as she did against Bondrewd. But I agree that she's very underused; Nanachi's been the real star of the last two arcs. Riko'll spend a big chunk of the anime out of commission. This new arc seems to be about her though, since the end results love her and their princess seems to be coming for her. She's a clever kid so maybe being in such a social environment is her chance.

But Riko is definitely growing stronger, even mentally. One of my favorite scenes in the manga is after breaking her arm under horrible conditions she despite pain and sadness finds happiness from the fact she can still move her finger a tiny bit. It's very nice scene and definitely reflects her strength.

If anything these points are important to set the tone of the series. From my perspective, morally speaking, the case against Nanachi is too inconclusive to make a moral judgement either for or against her. If she believed she was under threat of death, then it can be argued that her cooperating with Bondrewd was self-preservation. Even if Nanachi wasn't being coerced through threat of violence at that point, Given Bondrewd's moral character and previous actions, compliance under those circumstances can be justified. Another issue is the mental trauma she suffered due to being a participant in his experiments. Although we cannot make any assumptions about her psychology due to abyssal influence, she clearly exhibits abnormal character traits that for a normal human would be considered signs of a severe mental disability such as PTSD; although this does not entirely absolve her of any moral guilt should the first point turn out to be false, it does make her actions somewhat less immoral considering she was not of a sound mind while committing them.

Bondrewd says that he has to offer Nanachi is "gratitude" for finally accomplishing setting Mitty free. So he was thankful for it.
This raises a lot of questions, like why he didn't use Sporagmos to kill all the rugs in his garden if he wants them to be set free?

We don't know whether Lyza needed her pick or whether The Lord of Mystery is dependent on an artifact, but it isn't that shocking that the legendary white whistles are carried by their artifacts. Bondrewd at least would have died a long time ago without Zoaholic.

In that respect it's not horribly unfair that Riko depends heavily on her own artifact, Reg. Given that she is officially still only a red whistle it's barely even surprising.

If it just said loss of humanity then it wouldn't be lethal. As for the rest, all of the other curses are survivable as a human. Of course they are fucked up afflictions but it's still possible. The 6th layer is written in such a way to make it clear it's not survivable by a human, it's either mutation or death.

And then we and Riko et al. get to see what the 7th Layer's curse is like when it doesn't kill you.

I kinda want it to be Srajo because something like that happening to someone called "The Eldritch Lord" would be just all sorts of kek.
