In anime/manga they're sympathetic characters so when we see them suffer we laugh, but we also feel a bit for them. In reality if you're a woman, you're 30 and you're still single then you're just a horrible person and/or tragically ugly.

It's the same problem as in the West: women actually fell for the blatantly obvious and convenient lie that they could have it all. That they could have a career and earn the same wages as men but at the same time marry men who earn more than them and take care of them and at the same time have a family despite both parents working. By the time these women finally realize that if you have mutually contradictory wishes you need to compromise, they're already too old and often too ugly (most women don't age as graciously as our precious animu MILFs). By then all the men they are interested in are either already married or pounding younger puss on the reggie, and the only men left are the ones even they don't want. Or divorcees, but these men are often burnt hard enough to know better than try twice.

Some don't realize that in this globalized world the successful men also have options. There are girls from traditional orthodox Roman Catholic (real Catholic not faker Sunday Catholics), Muslim or Confucian background who are much more appealing in terms of being respectful/deferential towards men, family oriented and in general not being a cunt. Chivalry isn't free and these are the things women have to "pay" if they want it. As an attorney all the well off peers I know seek traditional wives rather than degenerate "California girl" Barbie types. You can fuck Barbies for fun in your 20s but you sure as hell don't bring them home and introduce them to your parents.

You're only half right. Japan still has a strong cultural expectation that once a woman has children she leaves the workforce to be a full-time housewife. Some more conservative elements expect this to happen when a woman gets married and doesn't even have kids yet. Japanese women aren't trying to "have it all" (that's an American woman thing) they are faced with the choice of abandoning their careers entirely or having a family.
The one segment of Japanese society that is breeding young are the working class who don't go to college, get married right out of high school, and frequently the wives have part-time jobs because it is less of a stigma for a mother in a poor household to work.
