The generic is the issue here, not the male. Either male MCs are Gary Sues, or they're ironic a la OPM.

Fem MCs are perhaps easier to transform into characters as they don't need to be centred around the tropes of victory and masculinity, but they just have their own cliches, often lying within self worth and community spirit. So whilst they're better than a generic male MC, we've had more than enough of them lately.

A good male MC, that's not all powerful, is not flawless, has ego, has pride, that's something I'd like to see in anime again. It's hard to think of any from the 10s, a few maybe from the 00s.

If I were to name a reason, it's because when I was rewatching glimpses of it, or seeing them posted, without the hype that was around it everything just felt ridiculous, stupid and over-exaggerated. I know that's part of its appeal, but I grew dislike towards it.
