It's a novel that's made by Kubo and Narita. It covers all the things that Kubo had to skip because of his injuries and illness, like the backstory of Ginjou, the future of the Quincy, what Ichibee planned with Ichigo, all the Soul King stuff and many minor things like Ikkaku's backstory before he met Kenpachi, etc. Hisagi is the MC and the main antagonists are the murderer of Tosen's friend and a nun who leads a religious cult in the real world. Shunsui, Giselle, Grimmjow, Ginjou, Harribel and Bambietta are said to play a big role in the story. Aizen's and Tosen's past will also be important.

They are not alive. They are in Squad 12 and Mayuri is only interested in corpses. Otherwise they would be in prison. Though Giselle might zombify them and any other Quincy Mayuri took and then dezombify them with his technology. Also the novel implies that Giselle is not simply a trap but might be more.

Honestly I wish they'd just mash the whole final arc into a single movie and be done with it. Hell, forcing the plot to climax only once and be more prompt about it would probably be an improvement. Turn the invasions into big group fights with a few cool solo moments to spotlight instead of a string of back to back sideplots, and just get it over with early.
