I haven't watched the anime, but I'm reading the manga and it still takes 2+ wideban volumes (so 4 regular ones) for Joe to get out of the reformatory, so it's not like that part goes by particularly fast. Of course, he already boxes then, just not on the official circuit, so it's still relevant.

~~I just finished reading Joe vs Rikiishi and I'm an emotional wreck. The fight was amazing and the ending a complete gut punch.~~
