Yes, I know its loosely based on manga instead of an anime - but its telling something that the quality of the adaptation depends on the adaptor's willingness to present something that are actually great even with loose adaptation, instead of souless cash-grabs capitalizing on existing fanbase.

Great no but it's definitely one of the rare american blockbusters that I enjoyed watching. The ending was terrible tho, really a shame that they didn't stick with the source ending. The Alien designs were also disapointing. But overall an enjoyable movie.

Hongo is built a little too small to really be Akagi but the j-drama was pretty great. The Nana movies are good.

The American Death Note shouldn't have been made as an adaptation of the original but have been it's own story set in the same world. The manga already makes it clear that the death note has interfered in human history many times before, so it'd make sense if there was one that dropped in America. But trying to shove elements of the original story into an altered setting and characters would just be jarring and seem completely out of place. It would've been best if they came up with an original story that captured the identity and ideas of the original instead of superficial lifting certain aspects into something else.

Speed Racer is a legitimately great and massively underrated movie. One of my favorites.
