It's not even the edge that's the problem, it's that when you kill everyone there's nothing to drive things on, you can't have chemistry with characters when they're all dead. The problem with Akame ga kill at the end was that everyone was gone and it was just a boring slog to the finish, it didn't help that the anime gave a rough layout of the things to come.
