Some Yugioh players watch the Yugioh anime to find out about new cards, archetypes and strategies before they come out in packs, even if the effects can change. It has been changin less than in the DM days.
That, in turn, causes the producers of the show to take this older public into account when making it. Yugioh writing isn't adult by any means, but it also isn't "let's be friends*10^120402" like the Pokemon or the Digimon anime.
The reason why neither Pokemon nor Digimon do that is because they don't have an interest in that demographic. After a new roster of pokemon is introduced, they can't keep introducing new pokemon left and right like Yugioh can with cards, since the pokemon roster is only updated when a new generation rolls around with a few exceptions like Ash-greninja, so trying to appeal to the older fans week after week is meaningless. In the other hand, the pokemon anime can try to win kids over while it's very unlikely it could convince adult fans to pick up a 3DS and start playing. Most older pokemon players like me started young.

Akira's job is to find Playmaker and get him to fork over Ignis, which means they need to get him to lose a duel to one of their guys, which means they need to find a guy to win a duel.

The shipper in me thinks this is going to play out like Duelist Kingdom, except with Akira ransoming Aoi after Yusaku and Aoi start getting attached to each other, instead of Akira ransoming himself.

It was a good idea that they executed in the laziest way possible. Action cards were intended to cut down on the bullshit cards in the deck that will never get printed. But then they just started using them as a crutch.

Yuzu vs Masumi II, Kachidoki vs Yuya (both), Yuya vs Jack I, Yuya vs Sawatari II, and Yuzu vs ENJOY were all duels that used Action Cards well.

I think if they had announced before the duel a list of action cards being scattered I'd feel way better about it. It's not like they don't just draw whatever card the writing needs anyway. It just feels like it gives them even more lee-way to make shit up. At least have an established and tangible list first.

I don't think they can just forget about something like that. We also still don't know how Aoi feels about Akira exactly, I don't think her feelings for him are just that of a little sister to an older brother, they might go beyond that

On the other hand I am certain that Akira only loves her like an sibling. It's not something they can just ignore, because they are each other's most important person, and clearly Yusaku it's a freaking third wheel here no matter how you look at it

When the main character by definition can't be defeated in a straight up game, pretty much. You can still do a lot of stuff like taking out all his friends unless he surrenders, try to kill him off with no games involved, set up a game where nobody can actually cheat, turn his victory into a defeat (GX style)... He takes a bit of imagination, but you have to respect the premise.
