Was anime better than manga? I've read one, and while the premise was quite interesting, generally it was just okay, could be better but ended too quick.

To start with, although Homura is the most important character, Sayaka carries all the plot in the anime. I mean, without her, we wouldn't even know about Soul Gems.
Plus, Kyoko is very important in some spin offs, like Oriko Magica.

Kyoko is there to help Sayaka moving in the story. Is thanks to Kyoko that Madoka throws Sayaka's Soul Gem, and in Wraith Arc she really helps Sayaka in some ways, although she can't change Sayaka's ending.
Also, in my opinion, Kyoko is there for psychological reasons, more than for the plot.
