The film is directed by Nobuyuki Takeuchi who did the excellent episode 9 of Penguindrum with that whole underground library thing so hopefully the direction will be strong. I believe it is the first project he has actually been the director of, rather than an episode director.

There aren't any particularly flashy scenes that are going to wow you in the trailer being shown, but the animation that is there seems quite fine to make that claim for. The cuts are all adequately fluid and there is some nice expressive character animation there. The only places things aren't moving really are where characters aren't moving.

It's kind of a ridiculous point to make in the first place. Anyone can quite easily find plenty of higher quality cuts than anything in the trailer in anime films. What really needs to be shown is that your average anime movie is going to be consistently higher quality in animation than cuts like those. Sure you wouldn't be surprised to see some of those cuts in a TV anime but likewise you would be surprised to see all of that animation in a single episode.

Just finished the live action film, and it was really nice and bittersweet. Reminded me of Stand By Me, and Typhoon Club.

They need to stop hiring Watanabe Akio to do character design for every fucking Shaft anime. It was cool when Bakemonogatari came out but his style is getting run into the ground and I just want to see Shaft make more anime that DON'T plaster his faces on all its characters. Considering how they've demonstrated in the past that they're amazingly capable of recreating original art styles like Hidari's with Sasami-san, I'd like to see that skill be put to work more.

I like Akio's style, but the problem is that all his girls end up looking so much like each other. Just compare Grisaia (the VN) to the monogatari adaptation. Even the girl for this movie looks like Senjougahara.
