Expand on Shinji's relationship with the men in his life, Toji, Kaworu, Kaji and Gendo are already perfect counterparts to Asuka, Rei, Misato and Yui.

They seem to be clearly under misato, and yet they seen to know absolutely everything during EoE. Anti-AT fields, the At fields of people, lilith, reis role in everything. I think that perhaps fuyutzuki explained what was going on to them off screen, but it still seem really off to me.

It makes sense to keep Kaji distant since he's busy and Asuka and Shinji are able to think he's a substitute teacher kind of cool because they barely know him, and Kaworu's importance is in being a suspicious figure introduced after everything is going to hell, so that was all the relationship, but definitely there is room to add more of Shinji settled in and contrasting with bros.

That one's because they're all still kind of the same person. The idea was Rei in part identifies with the purpose she was created for and blames Shinji for depriving her life of meaning, that manifesting in Quatre the silver one who wants to burn Shinji alive and also suck on his tongue. It's like a rule that whatever a Rei's relation to Ikari she's going to be inappropriate about it.

The characters had some nice moments and toward the middle, but everyone kinda suddenly moved away after the Rei2 died. I think in general the series did not have enough episodes to get a full sense of what Gainax was trying to convey. If I remember right the original proposition for the anime had almost 30 angels

I'm going to duck out of hard mode for this one. The first thing that I'd do is have a a couple more episodes like Fuyutsuki's where we dive into the past of the staff of Nerv. The bridge bunnies are also more fleshed out as characters, particularly Aoba, who I really thought was good but underdeveloped. However, I would also allow the commentaries/criticisms of various aspects of both Otaku and the wider world at large to remain.

Also, introduce Kaworu a bit after Asuka and keep him around for a while as pillar for Shinji and a suitor for his affections. I'd also have more interaction between the children as general. Rei and Asuka would keep their antagonistic relationship, however, it would be more mutual than in the original. Kaworu and Rei would also have an incredibly poor relationship due to their respective nature while Kaworu and Asuka would view each other as strange creatures, with Asuka being more antagonistic in that relationship.

NGE is literally flawless. Any perceived flaws only serve to elevate it as a work of art. I wouldn't change a single drop of ink. It's tantamount to asking how you would "improve" Michelangelo's David, or Da Vinci's Mona Lisa or Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.

I'm being 100% unironic. Evangelion is one of the most significant works of art ever created, and easily the most significant work of animation in human history. To think you can "improve" it is an act of aesthetic heresy.

Shinji Ikari falls in love with an Asuka Langley Soryu.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the German girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression, asking, "Anta baka?" After some investigation, he finds out that the redhead he called is not the same bitch he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is Asuka Shikinami Langley, Asuka Langley Soryu's alternate universe counterpart who has fallen in love with Shinji's own AU self who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of TSUNDERE.

I honestly feel like it would make it better. In my experience it added nothing to the story other than a shortcut to making Shinji killing Kaworu more impactful, which could have still been done easily if they treated it like a friendship instead of love.
