Then at the end of the match Chrollo offers to return Black voice the ability to Shalnark but the latter comments that without the phone it would be useless. So even if people want to assume that Chrollo talking to whoever is proof of anything, since Shalnark has only used the number pad to control his victims, it still doesn't explain how Shalnark supposedly helped out in the fight without his own phone to manipulate the puppets.

I really liked it, it captured the light-hearted feel of the pre-Chimera Ant arcs, barring most of Yorknew well. But if you compared Hisoka's character in this to the manga you can tell it was trying to channel the most from that arc; infiltrate the "trope", and fight the boss. But once it got to the big fight it lost a lot of steam, the fight wasn't bad just didn't feel very like HxH, the ending page was good though. Tbh I would like to see more of this from Ishida since he's probably the only person whose non-canon one-shots would be acceptable and it felt good seeing the world of HxH expanded a bit more. I could see it. It's mentioned by Ging in a later chapter that the Calamities were forced upon the different Dark Continent expeditions by the gatekeeper as punishments for underestimating the Dark Continent and failing their missions. Perhaps the original Kurtas were the first humans to enter the Dark Continent and the Calamity that befell them was the Crimson Eyes, and over time they found a way to suppress them that was lost on their descendants who tried going back inland while the main group decided to prevent further tragedy by guarding routes to the DC carefully and only allowing select people to travel there.

Some advice, I saw some of the '99 anime and was underwhelmed, even more so when I saw some of the 2011.

It wasn't until I started reading that I got an appreciation for it. I'm not calling it the
"best shonen ever" (you probably mean battle shonen but still) either, but the manga is what captivated me. I still like some of the music and voices as well as seeing certain things animated though.
