Great works are not culturally entrenched.

You can't have an epic story or a masterfully done animation sequence and limit yourself to ragional cliches at the same time. At best, you become famous in your own country.

Nobody sees anyhting particularly french in Moebius' l'Incal yet it's praised as one of the best comics in history. The same goes for watchmen, El Eternauta (argentine comic), animations like Mononoke, Jin-Roh and many of Disney classics that resonate thorough all the world. (Jin-Roh in fact was the primary influence for the franchise Killzone)

This problem in fact permeates all of Japan. It's one of the countries that fervently refuses to abandon regionalism when maknig something. It's like if all music produced in the USA where to be chicago house, elvis era rock & roll and country, completely ignoring how that music was developed and internationalized in other countries.

It's astonishing that a country that produces so much culture can barely penetrate the international market.

By all intents Junji Ito should be world famous as one of thefathers of horror comics, but he is still a niche subject because his comics are so Japanese people have trouble understanding them.

In the same way the idol market was lost to Korea. Granted Korea tends to act like a western lap dog from time to time, but they know when and when to adopt cultural regionalism in their media.

If you want to consume the products another culture, that's great. But animation is much more than that and you can't claim something is great while remaining barely understandable by anyone who is not Japanese.

Korea isn't a good example to use, I guarantee if porn were legal in Korea idols would have NEVER gotten as big as it is, or if it were made legal now I guarantee the idol business would make quite a bit less money, more than a few percent at the very least.
