I'm no fan of shounen, but even I thought this last episode was a bit wonky. The rest of the season worked well, but this episode repeated the same beats for too much of its length. Additionally, the tension in this episode was very low, making for an uninspiring climax.

- The jettisoning of 5/7ths of the main witches, one after another after another, was tedious and wasteful. Their individual personalities contributed nothing to the conclusion of the story; the actual act of their boosting Akko meant nothing because they ended up getting various other speed boosts anyway. It was constructed merely so the characters could get face time in during the final, rather than because the story needed it.

- The politics were a drag. Andrew and every other character from the politics subplot strung out over the course of the season ended up meaning nothing. Nothing they did was necessary in the story.

- The crowd bits were okay. Cheesy, but passably cheesy in a way that suited the show.

- Setting the entire episode in the sky was visually uninspiring. Sitting still on a broom flying across a blue backdrop is not terribly exciting no matter how fast they're moving.

- No one made any important decisions. They were merely railroaded along by the plot. This reduces dramatic tension, leading to a lackluster climax.

- It felt more like a "LWA: Greatest Hits" album than anything novel for the series. Returning to old material can work well, like the reintroduction of the legendary broom, but even that was unsurprising. Nothing in this episode was surprising, really.

Having said this, I enjoyed it anyway. The final scene was the perfect conclusion. Yet I can't help but wish it had been a better episode overall.

I stopped watching with /a/ after around episode 10 or so, only because I got hooked on some threads in other boards. So I guess my opinion is not biased by whatever has been discussed yet.


Holy shit, muh heart, this anime was comfy as fuck. Although thinking about it now, the last sequence against the missile and with the Shiny Rod reminded me a lot about the Kill la Kill ending.

I loved it tho, 7-8/10 show, 9/10 for me.

They only got the crowd boost because they got close to the missile. The other witches sacrifices weren't in vain in terms of the plot. Narratively you're right, though. Because they needed to give them something to do before it became the Akko and Diana show.

I agree on the politics, but Andrew in general has been a total waste of time. Trigger should have discarded him when they gutted his relevance instead of keeping her around for nothing.

As for your complaint about the location... is this your first anime dogfight?

It was a fantastic ending to a great series, made better by the fact that it has grown and developed along with its character over the course of 25 episodes. I could never have predicted actually liking Akko when I was halfway through the first cour, and I really like how they never sidelined Diana just to give Akko more of the spotlight.

Just finishing watching the episode

Holy shit, I got tingles sometimes and I was genuinely smiling throughout the entire episode. The animation when Akko and Diana were fighting against the Hate Missile was fantastic.

Trigger's plot in their shows may be wonky in the middle of airing but man do they know how to end their shows with a bang.

10/10. Can't wait for that trade show in July where they'll announce their next project.

I'll miss constantly clamoring for subs to come out with you guys.

I think there are some genuine criticisms with the show itself and if I were in a mood to be more critical there were things I could mention about the final episode as well but I really did enjoy the show on the whole. The final episode was a very solid one and I only wish all of the episodes prior were as strong as that one.

Despite the slow bits and sometimes meandering plot, I have to give Trigger credit it where it's due for being able to stick the landing.
