>Character says "Last Name, First Name"
>Subtitles say "First Name, Last Name"
>>
>Character says "Big brother"
>Subtitles says Big brother characters actual name
>>
Anon takes his Japanese cartoons naming order very seriously.
>>
>>158913000
This has been happening lately with My Hero Academia and it's pissing me off. Makes literally zero sense
>>
>>158913199
This one triggers me in particular because Iida never even mentioned his brother's name and suddenly the subs are slapping it in your face.
>>
>>158913183
When the translation feels like it's assuming the viewer is deaf it's pretty irritating
>>
>>158913000
Isn't it because of how unnatural it is to constantly referring to their sibling as brother/sister in the English vernacular?
>>
>>158913000
I noticed this happens a lot.
For no real reason.

Even toku subs have this shit. Guy very clearly says "onii-chan" and they just put the characters name in the subs.
>>
>>158913486
Except it's not unnatural, and it happens often that family members refer to each other by familial relationship.
>>
>>158912600

Gee, it's almost like different cultures place different importance on surnames.
>>
>>158916551
Its definitely the case with brother/sister, and the emphasis often indicate the current mood of their relationship.
>>
>>158916551
Not in English unless you're Amish or in a cult.
>>
>>158917611
>he doesnt call his brother bro
>>
>>158917659
That's a coarse way of calling them, and is more often related to calling non-familial people (kind of like how Nii/Onii can also used informally to refer to non-familial people).
>>
>>158917817
>coarse way
if you only speak formally to your family then you must have an incredibly poor relationship.
>>
>>158918042
In English speaking countries, they refer to siblings by name.
>>
>>158918139
Im in an english speaking country, and we don't.
>>
>>158918219
First-world English speaking countries, anon.
>>
>>158918139
>In English speaking countries, they
>they
Thanks for the lesson, pedro.
>>
>>158918219
What country?
>>
>>158912600
So it's actually supposed to be Scum Trash?
>>
>>158918303
>>158918816
Literally freedomland.
Minneapolis
>>
>>158918906
I've traveled around the US to over 29 states and lived in 3 and I've never heard this before. You're either Amish, your family is a cult, or you're full of bullshit.
>>
>>158918219
Wait I'm in Freedomland too. What the fuck do you call your siblings then, sis? Bro?

I've never seen anyone do this where I've lived.
>>
>>158919862
I've never heard sis, that would be too bizarre. I call my brother bro though.
>>
>>158918906
ayy. Wayzata represent.
But seriously everyone I know here calls their siblings by name
>>
>>158919862
Bro and Sis are common here. Unfortunately, so are Bubba and Sissy. How many non-southerners even realize that's where bubba comes from?
>>
>>158913000
Thank fucking god. You don't call your brother "brother", unless you're completely retarded. It's something that need to be adapted, simple as that.
>>
>>158921246
>multiple people in the thread from multiple regions have already told you you were wrong before you entered it
>nobody does it
Reminds me of that passing fancy I had to one day be involved that scanlation group that I may take complaints of the likes of you and get to reply, "fuck you, we're doing it this way.

>Even toku subs
There are worse problems with toku subs.
>>
>>158921246
That's fine for manga and the like, but for anime it's just jarring to hear something that doesn't match the subtitles.
>>
>>158912600
Y-your'e just a weeb for wanting subs to translate accurately! Ha I just called you a weeb!
>>

52KB, 482x473px
>character 'X' says words, drives point home when he says the Y's name last after brief pause
>subtitles place the name before everything else, last word Y reacts to after brief pause is just some other word
>>
>>158921246
Why the fuck should characters that aren't English speakers have their lines "localized" to common American English?
>>
>>158922807
Because you are reading a translation.
>>
>>158923152
I -wish- I were reading a translation, but I'm not. I'm reading a "localization".

If they use a figure of speech, -translate- it. Don't replace it with something a native speaker of -my- language would say because you think it'll help me "relate" better.
>>
>>158923152
Translation is a different thing from localization, just sayin'.
>>
>H-how dare these shit translators reorder the words to make better sense in English
>never mind that is exactly whats done in every sentence translated from Japanese to English ever because grammar differences
>Sure go ahead and reorder the entire phrase to actually make sense in English, but GOD HELP YOU if you touch my "Surname, Personal Name" convention

One day some autist is going to complain that he wants "truly pure" subs that actually translate the です at the end of like 70% of conversational Japanese sentences and add ", it is" to the end of every single one to achieve 100% translation accuracy.

That day, I will probably strangle 1,000 puppies in a rage
>>
>>158925477
You can't tell the difference between rearranging words to make grammatical sense (which is part of translation), and rewriting or replacing dialog to appeal to what you think another culture wants?
>>
>>158925609
But turning "Smith John" into "John Smith" is rearranging words to make grammatical sense (since in English grammar given names go before family names) as opposed to "rewriting or replacing dialog"
>>
>>158925755
I mixed you up with the "brother/character name" conversation. My apologies.
>>
>>158925755
So that means you'll hear "Trump Donald" in nip news, amirite?
>>
>>158912600
>2017
>still using subs
>>
>>158925847
Yeah, I agree with you on that. Leave brother as brother. I also get not translating untranslatable things like honorifics.

But the order of names and what >>158922686
said just tick me off as someone who knows a bit about translating. the reason >>158922686's pet peave happens is again, grammar. If a Japanese sentence has a word at the end, its 90% certain any intelligible English translation will have that word somewhere else simply because otherwise you end up with gibberish
>>
>>158926033
Finally watched Koe no Katachi. Took me so long because I had to learn sign language fist. Glad I did.

Only True way to enjoy this piece of cinema.
>>
>>158926033
You wouldn't be a witch, would you?
>>
>>158912600
In most shows this wouldn't matter but in Love Lab this was actually an important plot point.
>>
>>158922132
>"Hey, brother!"
>goes to say "brother" everytime you're addressing them
No you fucking don't
>>
>>158913000
It only bothers me if this reveals the character's name before it's even spoken on screen

>subs say "big brother"
>>
>>158927577
it should just be kept as onii-san localization niggers like herkz need to be shot
>>
>>158916551
Dubs are for those changes. But the CR plebs can't deal with literal translations. They need localized subs.

Through the dark lord, amen.
>>
>>158925755
Or write it like "Smith, John". That's a way that is used in reality quite often.
>>
Those fucking guys. It's like you have no family, you don't address to your brother by calling him "brother" constantly. And don't get me started with the onii-chan, if you want to experience the japanese script as is then you should learn japanese. Don't fucking act like a teenager spouting some word in another language just to show off, you're a disgrace.
Guess what, things get lost in translation because that's how it works.
>>
>>158928679
fuck off herkz
>>
>>158912600
>needing subs
>>
>>158931097
I wish I knew english as well as herkz.
>>
>>158931509
And I too, wish I was as handsome and smart as herkz.

t. totally not herkz.
>>
>>158931570
I'm a filthy ESL though.
>>
>>158931637
Sure explains your lack of standard.
>>
>>158912600
>>158913000
>>158913371
> I WANT MY SUBS TO BE IN BROKEN ENGLISH TO ACCOMMODATE MY WEEB TASTES
>>
>>158919862
Not referring to your sister as sister as sis... I bet you've never even fucked your cousin.
>>
>>158928679
I bet you prefer if honorifics are left out as well...
>>
>>158931839
Yes, but I can tolerate them depending on the settings of the show. I used to be like you faggots 10 years ago but you eventually grew up and learn things.
>>
>>158931798
>Correct name order, big brother = Broken English
Crawl back into your third-world ESL hole, scum.
>>
>>158931963
>settings
>but you eventually grew up and learn things.
Not English apparently.
>>
>>158932035
Fuck off, it's 12pm and I haven't slept for the past two days.
>>
>>158931985
So which English speaking country are you from? Liberia? Nigeria? You don't sound smarter than a 3rd world shithole dweller.
>>
>>158931963
But why would you willingly forgo information at little extra cost?
I mean, there is quite a difference (to stay with the brother thing) between 'Onii-san' and 'Nii-chan' that would both be rendered as [First Name] in English.
>>
>>158932358
Forgive me if I don't take you seriously. You don't even know what "Broken English" is.
>>
This is how you do it.

>anime takes place in Japan, Asia or some JRPG or parallel world-like fantasy setting like Konosuba
Nii-san, Onii-chan, Nee-san, etc. Leave the honorifics the same.

>anime takes place in Americas or Europe, or some historical setting that explicitly takes place in those areas
Brother, Sister, Sis, etc.
>>
>>158932884
I mean, how common is the second category anyway?
I can only think of maybe a hand full of things that unambiguously fall in that that category...
>>
>>158931963
you sound like a pathetic fedora tipping moron, just like herkz
kill yourself
>>
>>158931798
Kill yourself you subhuman scum.
>>
>>158917429

Then explain how the Japanese have the common decency of calling Westeners "first name, last name" even though their culture puts the last name before the first name.
>>
>>158926861
This basically happened in Kimi no na wa.
The first time Taki wakes up in Mitsuha's body and Yotsuha comes to the room she says Onee-chan and the subs say Mitsuha.

I fully understand the argument that in the west we don't really use "brother" and "sister" to address siblings but this is a situation where something should have been done to preserve the situation of him not knowing her name.

I dunno how the dub handled it.
