>So you want a realistic down-to-earth show that's completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots?
Nichijou is the best anime of the past two decades.

Best comedy anime, sure

I'd still put Fumoffu above it, though I'll admit that's largely nostalgia goggles at work.

Nichijou is a huge breath of fresh air compared to most anime and it actually got me into Japan, especially Japanese aesthetic and art. Everyone argues about the comedy or animation but its strongest points for me are all the little meaningful slices of life and the overall tone. I haven't watched an anime since that feels as human.

>realistic down to earth
What?
Nichijou was definitely not that. If you want to do down to earth but still weird, go Azumanga Daioh. Nichijou is absurdist comedy.

Even when it gets absurd plenty of those segments are still just exaggerations of real life situations, not driven to the point of absurdity but just exaggerating the features that make them what they are, like Yuuko being a spastic trying to order coffee. Of course you have things like the cube hair tie plot lines and the part where Mio drops her comics but for every one of those there's another scene that's down to earth.
