But its your (and maybe my, as well) favourite episode because all the tension built up thus far reaches fever pitch, the moody colors reflect it perfectly, a great foil for the protagonist is introduced, and we finally get a bit of exposition. And it's perfectly structured.

I thought this was supposed to have good animation? It's abysmal animation. The art style is fucking terrible all the characters look ugly and it switches to manga style for no reason other than to be randum. I couldn't even get past the first episode.

FLCL failed to deliver an entertaining/coherent series and relied solely on its insert soundtrack and "metaphors" to be liked. There are plenty of anime that can portray themes and meanings whilst also telling an actual grounded story that weaves with those themes flawlessly - see: Mushishi.

Just because it had a higher "meaning" behind the series, doesn't mean that it was good. That meaning is portrayed better when there's a proper story at its core. FLCL is just le random xD *insert rock song in sync with animation*

It tells a very focused and holistic story. One that is fairly down to earth, really, despite the obvious fantastic flourishes. Whether or not its entertaining is subjective, but I think it is. It is metaphoric, but no more so than most fiction. There are children's books which rely more on metaphor than FLCL does.

FLCL does have a "proper story". It isn't told conventionally all of the time, but it definitely follows a clear narrative. A good way to ruin a nice, self-contained story is to tack on shit after the fact. If your sequel takes a respectful distance from the past work, it avoids the risk of retroactively ruining it. This is especially important for something as "classic" as FLCL.
