Complex story doesn't always equate to good, but it definitely takes more skill to write a complex story with a lot of character development and introspection than a simple story. When complex stories are done wrong (IE some parts in the first half of Death Note and the entire second half), it gets grating to go through, especially when all your twists start becoming "I'LL TAKE THIS POTATO CHIP AND EAT IT" and "MINI TVS LMAO". Simple stories can work out nicely as well but sometimes a story too simple and to the point might need a bit of an edge to keep my attention.
