Is it just me or is DBZ abridged waaaay better than it should be?

Like yeah you'd expect it to be funny but it's way smarter and more quotable than you'd think - I almost feel like if those guys were working in a big studio they'd be really successful.

The thing I usually have against parodies is that they can take away some of the magic from the og show and yet with Abridged I feel it actually just adds to the franchise.

Sure you can say it's much easier to add/parody a show than create one from scratch, which is true. But all the call backs, endlessly quotable lines and a sense of characterisation thats so hilariously spot on, it's arguably way more consistent than the show - which again is the opposite to what you'd expect, as parodies often just make the characters crazy versions of their former selves for a cheap laugh.

Even just little things like trunks suddenly saying 'crap baskets' after hearing gohan say it for so long, isn't just funny but adds a real sense of weight and plausibility to the world of the show.

Anyone else think this is kinda crazy? Like If I feel the need to get a DB fix I usually end up opting for abridged over Kai and noticing extra little inside jokes or even have my attention drawn to details in the relationships of certain characters from the og show.

No, DBS wasn't concived at that moment and the first new antagonist was Hit, not Zamasu, and it was confirmed when Black arc was announced that Toriyama created it thanks to some ideas of editors(?) for the series, so Zamasu was created after RoF and SSGSS conception when DBS was already a thing for the entire world

It's actually the opposite. Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT were mostly outsourced to smaller animation companies that Toei worked with. Super is actually mostly in-house animators. The animation supervisor for the notorious episode 5 of Super was actually Naoki Tate, who is actually pretty talented.

Not necessarily true. While Toriyama was at the mercy of his editors during Dragon Ball's serialization in Jump, it only really showed when he had long term plans. On a chapter to chapter basis, he didn't plan what would happen next. He would draw the panels first without thinking of dialogue or what was going to happen, and he would then write the script around what he drew. He did have certain plans in store (ie. God was an alien from his introduction and he and Piccolo were speaking an alien language, characters were killed off when the Saiyans showed off because he figured the series would continue for a while anyway, #19 and #20 were meant to be the main antagonists following Freeza until his editor requested something else, so he made up #17, #18, and #16, and then his editor requested something else, so he made up Cell, and then his editor asked to give him transformations like Freeza, etc.)

While things were added here and there to the story, the flow of the story was all Toriyama. His third editor was pretty lax so he let him do whatever he want during Boo.

The general outline for Super is very general. Usually it's just a page of notes and some rough illustrations. Toyotaro will send stuff back for suggestions, Toriyama will point out to make a few minor changes here and there, and Toyotaro draws the rest of the stuff. The anime presumably doesn't have this same back-and-forth and just works with the initial suggestions. Toyotaro does have some creative freedom though, and it shows in his attention to detail. I swear the whole "Trunks realizes he can heal because he was an attendant to a Kaioshin" thing was Toyotaro's idea. Only he would remember some small detail like attendants being able to heal but Kaioshin not having that power and use it as a story element. Meanwhile, the idea that Potara fusion only lasts an hour for mortals is definitely a Toriyama retcon for story convenience.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z had constant moments of the characters we were supporting feeling outmatched and trying their hardest to to win, attempting to outsmart their opponent in the process too and unwillingly working together with what was still deemed to be their enemy or even nemesis.

Right now Dragon Ball Super is just "Here's a reason here's a training session in a time bubble of some sort, here's a fight repeated over and over again."

I've posted a lot several months ago about how dull the characters are and how they just all magically get along with each other, with the biggest disagreement so far being "I don't feel like it, I have other things to do or I don't care".

Part of Dragon Ball was the tension even amongst the main cast, that none of them were fully reliable, that there were several parties all fighting to achieve the same goal but there was one big bad with an edge over the others. This kinda started fizzling out during the Cell saga, and was pretty much gone by the time Vegeta blew himself up during the Buu arc.

I really fucking enjoyed that, I really fucking enjoyed Vegeta's Final Flash and conning Perfect Cell into standing in place after realizing how much he had fucked everyone and himself over by allowing him to reach perfection, I mean yes there were certain parts that I refused to accept like a fucking Cell Jr dissipating his Final Flash like it was nothing. That was bullshit.

Gimme a breather, I mean do you really want to hear me rant more? I'll probably go off on a tangent on how much I love the original Dragon Ball series.

Z had its shitty moments (5 minutes etc), but when there were good moments, they were really fucking good - Super hasn't had any good moments that have made me really shit myself in excitement and yell "YES, THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME".

Once Super gives me several moments of Holy Fuck I just creamed myself then I will give Super a better opinion.
