Translating a phrase form Japanese to English is usually a pretty tricky thing to get right in general, but trying to translate a Japanese phrase into an English one of similar length, that at least partially fits the animation is nearly impossible. Any 'successful' attempt is either a convenient coincidence, or the result of butchering the meaning, implication, or emotion in a phrase.

Of course none of them approach the level of performance or character fit as the original Japanese. The problem with dubs is that voice work is both lucrative and incredibly competitive in Japan. Casting is an arduous component of the original production. You just can't duplicate that in localization shops. Funimation just pulls from whoever is available and they think might fit out of their limited stable of staff VAs. And it's not like you can blame them, they don't really have the resources to do any better, and they are well aware that any discerning anime fan is gonna be watching subs anyway so why bother spending a bunch of time and money on quality dubs? Everybody has made up their minds in advance about whether they'll be watching dubs or subs, so it's irrelevant. Given all of this, how is their VA work ever supposed to compete with the original performances?
