Remember the beginning when Tomoko actually used to be sympathetic

The entire point of her character is that she's a *realistic* shut-in. She's dumb, mean and utterly full of shit. She causes 100% of her own problems; that's what makes her interesting.
You can still feel bad for her but she isn't the hero of this story.

This story had the same problem that One Punch man had except that was handled a lot better.

Both series have a very unique premise with very little room for character development without breaking said premise. Tomoko needs to be a shut-in and Saitama needs to be invincible. Since so much of the respective series appeal is placed in these very simple ideas it's hard to really develop the characters without ruining what makes them appealing in the first place.

I think the author one OPM got around this by making Saitama almost a side characters in his own manga and it works for the most part. The author of Watamote decided to expand the main cast instead but unfortunately none of them are all that interesting.
