I don't see how anyone can like MS5. It's got complete garbage level design that really wants to slow you down instead of keeping the action going and the sliding mechanic blows. MS7 is insanely boring with almost the whole game taking place underground, the least amount of flair in scenarios, and the new Morden grunts from the future barely adding anything new to the gameplay and absolutely nothing to the story.

Basically world is at total war around late 2020's and the military is pretty corrupt. Morden is one of the commanders, but during a botched air raid by the military his son gets killed. This seriously pisses him off so he wants revenge hence he raises his own army. The plot of the first game is basically the military is actively fighting his forces and is developing the metal slugs. Morden catches wind of this and some of his forces manage to steal some of them as well as the plans to build them in order to make them himself. When the military finds out they send Marco and Tarma to get the plans back as well as any taks or destroy them. (this is why at the very start of the final mission of the first game you see some metal slugs hauling ass as you drop down via parachute). IIRC that's the backstory of the first game. The rest is basically as the games portray.

To be fair the Metal Slug's design actually was designed after the tank in dominion tank police. Plus the game takes place in the not too distant future, so it could work. My favorite part of that scene is how when the rocket rises up you're accompanied by soldier allies who proceed to fly past you. After you clear the alien waves you're shown the destroyed wrecks of all those allied soldier ships from before floating idly in the background
