The only issue I have with this show and many others like it is that they start of with a pretty promising premise, usually little gorl goes to war but then for some reason the are stationed really far away from any action and precede to have an entire season of just normal SoL stuff.

There's nothing wrong with SoL but why bother setting up the whole dying world + war backstory when the story progression is literally;

Not him, but the problem is THERE WAS NO FUCKING ACTION. I expected the series to instantly break out into a brutal war, thus forcing what should have been an otherwise quiet outpost into fighting with a rickety spider tank made out of scrap parts.

About halfway through they even showed how the world was going to shit, what with squads of Panzer Spider Tanks being laughable compared to the supposedly "ancient" laser beam blasting, wall climbing, ayylmao tanks. All we instead got was a bunch of girls doing stupid shit, producing illegal alcohol, needing to take pee breaks, and participating in a Super Soaker tournament.

It's not a good show. It's basically cuteness/comfiness + PTSD and people think it's masterpiece material. The focus was all over the place with too much meandering, they tried to give each character their Arc but the whole thing ended up feeling hollow.

On the other hand Haibane Renmei knew exactly what it wanted to be, using the warmth of iyashikeis while subverting it with a constant feeling of dread you can't quite shake off to allow the viewer to open up before diving into the meat of the show. ABe wanted his work to feel personal, so the setting is only used as a huge allegory and a background for the true focus of the show, the two mains' emotional dilemmas. The supporting cast is only used as a believable enough cast of characters Reki will separate herself from. It's no wonder Haibane's final episode is so emotionally engrossing despite taking place in a small room, everything was leading up to that kind of climax. Haibane is so well crafted, it's the type of show you enjoy more when you know where it ends up getting at. Deceptive simplicity and wonderful craft, peeling off layers of this anime makes you learn more about both the anime and the author but, most importantly, yourself. This unique functionality is what makes Haibane such a remarkable work. Not just cute girls and "edge".

Expecting a show that deals with existentialism to not have angst is like expecting a boxing anime to not have fights.

And what other ideas? Everything was leading up to "depression" and "suicide", story-wise. Just rewatch the first scene of the show. You can personally dislike the fact that it deals with that kind of topic, but don't say the show just "threw away" good ideas because it chose to go down that path and you personally wanted something else.

Haibane is more of a constant battle between empathy/altruism (deserved or not) and selfishness.

Oh come on. It was a nice uplifting ending that wrapped things up while showing how all of the characters you got to know and love would continue to have their peaceful lives and further adventures. We need more unambiguously good endings like that to scrub away the overwhelming cynicism that pervades /a/.

Sora no Woto completely lacks mono no aware. It doesn't even try to have it. That's why it's strange to put it next to things like YKK. I kind of liked SnW but it doesn't compare to things like YKK or Kino no Tabi.

The only things worth keeping from this show are the OST, the setting, the background art, and episode 7. Maybe episode 1.

I wanted to like it and I'm all for SoL about soldiers fucking about but a lot of the time the characters didn't really seem to fit. More like children playing soldier rather than actual trained soldiers.
Then we had shit like the piss episode on top of that.
