When a new fad delivers all of the same wish-fulfillment highs in a new setting that's just as easy to write.

Protip: isekai isn't popular because people like it a lot. It's popular because it's really fucking easy to write. Like, really, really easy. Any amateur with some spare time can pump out 500 pages worth of isekai fiction where even 10 pages of a real story might stumble them. The amateur publishing market is consequently flooded with them, and since they're easy to write, they also pull in casual fans that find themselves inspired to create from other's work.

We only see about the top .01% of isekai that float to the top by popular recognition, get republished as an LN, then adapted as an anime. The fad is fueled by the ease of creating the subject material, sort of like the popularity of shitty chinese manufacturing.

Urban fantasy or post apocalyptic, probably.
>>
>>157353483
No, it's an advertisement for an LN series. If your "something better" was promising to money lenders, they'd finance it as well. The amount of anime being produced per season has increased to an extraordinary degree.
Furthermore, isekai only make up a very small part of the total amount of anime being produced. You are being dramatic over nothing.

My sides. I watched the first season of SAO to see what the fuss was about and holy shit it was bad. Could not bring myself to watch the second season. How can that shit be so popular?
Konosuba on the other hand was hilarious. S3 when?
>>
>>157353566
>every single dumb trope
>hilarious
Meh
>>
>>157353239
You know, I notice that even though Konosuba tries to rag on every other dumb trope present in isekai there's a shocking lack of Japanese food wank, satirical or otherwise. Which is especially weird given how hedonistic Kazuma is.
>>
>>157353420
I wouldn't know. For an equivalent, you'd be looking at some fanfiction template scenario so ubiquitous that anyone with a keyboard could write something for it. Probably some permutation of smut.

I should also point out that isekai being a big deal in Japan is part because otaku culture is very, very visually-oriented, but many fans don't really have the skills to contribute visually. A big, popular prose fad brings all the people with no other creative skills into the participatory nature of creating amateur content.

Comparable western subcultures already tend to be more prose-focused than visual, and there's a long historical context for that, but it also means that you're less likely to see a singular, dominating long-term fad like isekai.
>>
>>157353239
>When will it end, /a/?
Considering that the last two notable examples of this genre were parodies - probably soon.
>>
>>157353761
Considering that we're getting theee of them next season - probably not.

>>157353780

>>
>>157353780
Didn't Kadokawa just ban Isekaishitu from their next novel competition?
>>
>>157353908
This isn't the first time it has happened. Most competitions ban isekai from these contests, and have for a while now.
>>
>>157353706

I think it's because the author expanded on the worlds cuisine itself, usually for the typical isekai it's just western food before the MC comes in and introduces the wonders of soy sauce.
>>
>>157353420

Crime shows, turn on TV and have a look there is tons of them with the same bland formulas and the difference between them is on the same level as isekais.

More like the other Japanese have already introduced the world to the wonders of Japanese cuisine before Kazuma ever even arrived.

>Doesn't taste anything like real mayo
>Nothing like real mayo.
Thanks for the explanation. Japs continue to have shit taste.
>>
>>157354109
There's a context to it Jap mayo is basically western ketchup, and is used much the same way. It's 'the sweet thing' people with no culinary appreciation put on everything. Just like ketchup in the west, parents douse their kid's food with it to make them eat, so there's the association of someone putting tonnes of mayo on everything with being childish or having childish tastes. The cute anime girl dousing her rice in mayo is like the american neckbeard putting ketchup on his well-done steak.

It's a denigrating character detail because jap mayo is a 'low brow' condiment for kids and uncultured urbanites.
>>
>>157354048
Is your definition of "real mayo" the one found in the US? Because it's very different from the original French one.

SAO is largely a drama about a guy who plays video games, Konosuba is primarily a comedy, ReMonster is self insert wank, Log Horizon is macro management wanking, a bunch of other series are sol hijinks. Isekei is just a plot device, not the factor which decides the quality of the work.

No, it's a personal power fantasy based on the realities that the readers commonly experience (usually video games).
The colonialist power fantasy is more patriotic and relies on your race and education and the capabilities of your nation as a whole.
In isekai you run on stats that have nothing to do with your race, you have cheat skills that have nothing to do with your education and you win while on your own and cut off from your nation's support.

No, that's actually a very defining part of the genre. It's just that most authors are awful at portraying it so it ends up something like pic related.

My personal favorite example is when an isekai protag literally invents "strategy" in a world that already has countries and standing armies.

Standing armies does not mean that you have good strategy. If a country is used to infighting and basically local troop deployment, and if they are suddenly expected to participate in a war effort hundreds of kilometers away, across difficult terrain even, then they would probably have no idea about how to move their armies there while keeping them as a cohesive unit and how to feed them.
If the protagonist is good at this sort of thing, then I can imagine him being able to help out an experienced power tremendously.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm not talking about "good strategy" but rather like I said the "entire concept of strategy" as in doing anything other than just running up and hitting each other until the side with more dudes wins is considered underhanded and unethical apparently.

Fair point, I guess. Tactics would be more accurate, but I had the word strategy in my head because that's actually what the translation used.

That being said I'll own up to it and rephrase my original statement to "the protagonist literally invented tactics" if that's acceptable. Does that make the premise any less retarded though or are you just trying to catch me on semantics?
>>
>>157357276
As I said, strategy is something that many small nations are not really used to having to deal with. Moving a large group of people over far distances comes all sorts of unexpected problems.
But on the topic of tactics, I agree with you. No modern man should even try to argue with medieval or ancient people on how to move on the battlefield. Even researchers dedicated to this sort of thing don't really understand how a roman Legion operated.

>>
>>157357212
Strategy and Tactics aren't that much different from one another. Its mostly a size thing that separates them.

Strategy = Use of all resources to accomplish long term goals. General plan often planned by the head powers of a group.
Tactics = Use of limited resources to accomplish short term goals that bridge a path to long term ones. Small plan formed by a section of the head power group and having their stuff done with their permission.

Examples:
Strategy = Contain the economic growth of a foreign nation and its crop yields. This would include persuading foreign powers not to buy that nations crops.

Tactics = To contain the growth of the foreign nation and its crop yields, setting up organized raids at night to burn their crops. Or preventing items of trade from arriving via sabotage.

that's because the author used food as a punchline to a different joke. everything in Konosuba's world has XP when you consume it. The higher class the item to eat, the tastier and more xp earned, of course high xp items FIGHT HARDER to live when you come to harvest them, most of those items being monsters or veggies which will kill you to avoid a dinner plate.

(coincidently, most farmers in fantasy ausieland, are absurdly high leveled, because harvest time is literally a life and death battle, and yes, food trying to kill it's farmer to prevent harvesting is another one of aqua's tragic accidents via resurrecting the wrong person and giving them an explosively overpowered cheat)

No, it was mediocre at best.
Idiots just love it because it had potential and makes them imagine how good the set pieces could be, but upon any amount of closer inspection, you should realise that it all falls apart and every aspect is handled incredibly poorly.
This delusion then extends to the rest of the show, and people think all of SAO is good because it has things that could be cool, and this tricks them into ignoring all of the tangible details.

>>
>>157358210
>butthurt retard who wasted their already worthless time playing a shitty eroge

The etymology of "Secondaries" comes from the superior ability of these individuals to delay gratification, and thus receive two marshmallows. This ability highly correlates with success, education, health and weight control. In this context, it refers to their ability to wait for a superior release in a superior medium (anime).

>In these studies, a child was offered a choice between one small reward provided immediately or two small rewards if they waited for a short period: approximately 15 minutes, during which the tester leave the room and then return. (The reward was sometimes a marshmallow, but often a cookie or a pretzel.) In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred rewards tended to have better life outcomes, as measured by SAT scores,[2] educational attainment,[3] body mass index (BMI),[4] and other life measures.[5]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_marshmallow_experiment

It is not surprising at all that bitter "primaries" who are often unintelligent, overweight, and unsuccessful at life, would attempt to turn it into a pejorative.

> 「Thus, with that in mind, I intend to make a dish called omelette rice today. You can use whichever type of rice you prefer, whether it’s short or long grain. The minimum required ingredients needed for this dish are onions[tamanegi], salt, pepper, and a homemade seasoning called tomato ketchup. Also, butter is necessary to further enhance its taste. Afterwards you can also add other toppings such as green peas, ham, mushrooms, and so on to your liking.」

>The ingredients needed to make the omelette rice were already arranged on the kitchen table.

>「Then, let’s start cooking at once. The typical way is to first, prepare a rice called butter rice.」

>Rio taught them how to prepare the butter rice.

>Since the Seirei no Tami also knew how to add flavour to white rice, they did not seem surprised in that regard.

>「Frying the butter rice with tomato ketchup will create chicken rice that will become the base for omelette rice. But, butter rice can also be turned into a different dish, called pilaf, by cooking it with different seasonings. You can enjoy this pilaf rice with different sauces and gravy added on top. I will save that dish for a future class.」

>The women raised minute voices of admiration at the variety of uses for the butter rice

>「While waiting for the butter rice to be cooked, we will prepare tomato ketchup. The ingredients that we’ll need are tomatoes, onions[tamanegi], garlic, sugar, salt, pepper, bay leaf, cayenne peppers, consomme, and cinnamon.」

>Glancing at the required ingredients arranged on the table, he skillfully began preparing tomato ketchup while explaining the required amounts and procedure.

>「Tomato ketchup is very flexible as it can be used in a variety of dishes. Because it can be preserved for a long time, it’s convenient to prepare some beforehand and store it.」

Holy shit this is revolutionary. An isekai that wanks ketchup instead of mayo? Amazing.

There's very little GOOD fantasy that takes place on Earth. It's almost always alternate worlds, lost continents, or so far in the past/future that the world is completely unrecognizable as Earth. And this is really how it SHOULD be. Just because something is "isekai" doesn't make it bad.

The real problem is just lazy authors using the same skeleton for the story, namely, the MC dies, god takes pity on MC and reincarnates him, MC proceeds to steamroll the other world. The video game status screen shit is simply because it makes it easy to quantify how strong particular characters are. Using descriptive language isn't going to drive home how strong the Demon Lord is, unless you use up entire chapters where he wrecks other powerful characters or unleashes some terribly destructive attack on something. Throwing a stat dump drives the point home with no effort required. It's lazy, but what do you expect from people raised in the modern age?
>>
>>157377506
That is because quite alot of those writers come from a fanfiction site which went down.
At that time the japanese hadn't really a good alternative, so quite alot of them just moved over to Narou and of course they write self-insert fiction.

I saw one of the Percy Jackson movies on an airplane, and the plot/setting was basically 'isekai' from what I remember. And there's a whole movie franchise of those movies.

I'm sure there are others. They are mostly for the Young Adult audience, though, so you and I probably aren't aware of them because they aren't targeted for our demographic.

There's also the whole "dystopian future where young person fights against muh system" that's probably bigger for the western world than an isekai setting is. The Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner, etc. There's shit tons of Young Adult movies and books set in that kind of universe.

Police drama/Sitcom
Much like Isekai, every individual show is essentially the same story, except there's some kind of twist in the basic premise to give you the illusion that you haven't seen it before, like instead of just being normal cops they're forensic specialists/ psychologists/crime novel writers etc.
I would still say that the average episode of some by-the-numbers police drama is better written than most Isekai, since on a basic level, they still understand that a good story is about intrigue and human emotion, and not just about Joe Schmoe running around being edgy, killing monsters and banging a bunch of broads in renaissance fair costumes

In shieldbro one country managed to monopolize the shit out of the heroes and their knowledge throughout the generations and ao they get to have stuff like cars, planes, guns, tanks and medical facilities such as hospitals.

Most other countries dont have such luxuries because they dont get to keep their heroes for long due to them dying early or getting snatched up by that country.
>>
My favorite characters in isekai have to be the side heroines that use modern knowledge cheat to make their mark on the work in contrast to the main character that uses overwhelming traditional cheat power to make things work for him.

Because they aren't the main character the author doesn't wank them to an unbelievable degree and have them manufacture AK-47s and automobiles in the space of a few weeks but instead have them work at an appreciable pace of reforming their kingdom over the course of several years while slowly introducing goods of their liking like ramen and modern hygienic products.

Examples like Nanahoshi from Mushoku Tensei and Liselotte from Seirei Gensouki come to mind.

>What are some isekais where people capitalize on the summoned heroes modern knowledge and make serious leaps in technology?

They usually just kind of fake it with magic. I mean, most people are just casual end-users of technology; they don't know all the intricacies of how it works and how it's made, and definitely not how to bootstrap up to it starting from 1300s tech. That goes both for the characters, and for the writers.

You *could* write that kind of story, if you planned it out to work from the beginning, but so far it's rare. It has potential, but modern Japanese webnovel isekai is for power/harem wish fulfillment, not for science history porn. When they do tech, it's to awe those savages with their superior Japanese culture folded a thousand times.

>You *could* write that kind of story, if you planned it out to work from the beginning, but so far it's rare. It has potential, but modern Japanese webnovel isekai is for power/harem wish fulfillment, not for science history porn. When they do tech, it's to awe those savages with their superior Japanese culture folded a thousand times
Even when people write those kinds of stories they still fall into the pit trap of making the MC impossibly intelligent trivially jumpstarting civilization several centuries ahead.

I mean, the idea of any one person single handedly being able to create, from scratch, what has taken some of the best minds in human history hundreds of years to research and create is inherently self-serving and wish fulfilling
It's the ultimate version that bit in every movie about the Titanic where someone says something to the effect of "There's no possible way this ship could sink", and it's very clear that that line only exists so the audience can sit back and feel smug and superior over how they know that the ship IS going to sink

>>
>>157380240
Unless the afterlife isn't heaven. For all we know, this could be the best possible timeline we get, and what lies on the other side of the veil is an abject horror that our minds cannot comprehend.

Or, you know, we could be reincarnated in this world. Again. Concerning the probability of being reborn in a first-world country is not that big, and that our world is always getting a little worse for the wear, that's a big problem there.

>>157380120

>>157383549
Yeah I had that feeling it was about to enter a boring arc
>Korean section
I actually never bothered with it before. I'll check it out.

Also, why is it almost all of the translated Chinese webnovels are powerlevel cultivation bullshit that would make DBZ blush? And to make it even worse the MC always makes the established powerlevels a useless metric. Even then decent ones suffer from this.
Can China write a single fantasy story that doesn't revolve around cultivation? Japan does it too with their JRPG leveling but the Chinese take it to a whole new level.
>>
>>157383602
>Problem is that there aren't a lot of ways a story like that can go.
How so? It's basically be like a strategy game version of isekai wouldn't it?

Spawning heroes to stop the demon lord but being unable to directly interfere due to annoying divine clauses and watching their progress from top down.

Then as the story goes on the MC starts increasingly breaking the rules to help the heroes who are startlingly incompetent until she gets the rulebook dropped on her head by her superiors or something. She could even spawn in mortal form like Eris.
>>
>>157383562
K6BD is good because of the constant worldbuilding. It's more than just generic fantasy #124, and for that it deserves some recognition. Hell, the fact that the MC has an all-female team is something nobody mentions because it's done well.

That said, the whole worldbuilding gets convoluted at times. Every time I read a new page, I seem to forget some of the lore.
>>
>>157354506
The second arc of SAO was better than the first arc. The first arc was generic and boring and I felt nothing watching it. Second arc went full retard, it was fun to watch and make fun of. GGO was somewhere in the middle. Mother's rosario might be the best sao arc on a technical level but honestly it's not worth watching because it's just boring like the first arc.

Only the interesting/hype stories get translated, and these are some of the more popular stories. Shit from IET is guaranteed to get translated, same with TJSS, author of Douluo Dalu. Most people who read these novels want to see the protagonist beat the shit out of arrogant young masters and get OP without any work at all. Even the Chinese fans want that. Unfortunately the good Chinese stories are either too hard to translate or take too long to translate. Or they're fucking shoujo.

As for the power level shit, its China wanking themselves as usual. Notice how everyone and everything follows the power levels in that universe and everyone speaks Chinese, they truly wish the entire world was like China. What kills me the most is the exaggerations in these novels, a dude can literally jump kilometers because magic.
>>
Problem with xianxia is that the end of the novel is usually around creator of the universe level, so there needs to be massive amounts of writing. So eventually the plots become noticeably repetitive and characters fall out of view with minimal development.

The other problem is that most of the early stuff is great so when it gets bad you still want to know how it all ends. There's a noticeable drop in quality in most xianxia around the point when the MC leaves their home planet 5ever. That's when you start seeing serious numberwank (MY SPIRITUAL PENIS IS 50000 TRILLION TO YOUR 45000 TRILLION!) and you lose the background of character development that had been going on for a few hundred chapters (Haerwho?).

I bet most Xianxia would be improved if the authors had a different endgame in mind besides "mortal cultivates into almighty creator of universes".
>>
>>157383948
>a dude can literally jump kilometers because magic.
The distances some of these writers give kill me
>Guy gets swatted and flies millions of kilometers away, continues conversation with MC like normal
>Continents billions of kilometers large
>Mountains millions of kilometers high

This is the worst shit, especially ISSTH.
The Mountain and Seas sounds interesting, but there is almost no worldbuilding whatsover.
At first Mountain and Sea sounds like continents, but then nope. There are planets too. So the Mountain and Sea is a solar system? Nope there is a literal Mountain that the MC climbs.
So are the planets just orbiting the mountain? What about the stars and stuff? Who the fuck knows. Oh the Sun and Moon (of which there is literally only one of for all these planets) are actually superweapons btw.
More plot and worldbuilding and less powerlevel shounen battles for fucks sake.

Its implied that there is shit outside of even there, man why the fuck do authors keep ruining good stories

Toriko is basically a Xianxia, yes. If the series continued past its endpoint, there would've absolutely been even more retardedly large numbers. The MCs were even fucking off into space to go to other planets.

Even worse, pre-Immortal level, the world made almost perfect sense. The pacing was decent, the mechanics of how things worked were either explained in detail or properly mystified, and Er Gen even remembered to power up and develop side characters/sects. Even the cultivation itself made perfect sense with each level fully detailing why it was hard to get there and what steps it took to get there.

I just hope that A Will Eternal doesn't fall to this, but I'm not holding my breath. Just have the decency to stop at exploring one planet, please.
