No idea. I think that the general manga/anime landscape is totally different now, especially since WSJ's big long epic series don't have that consistent reliable anime support that they used to. One Piece and Dragonball are basically grandfathered into the current environment.

It'd be pretty hard to replicate the huge hype that WSJ had when it was running OP, Naruto, and Bleach at their Apex ~10 or so years ago. Those three were big sellers not just in Japan, but internationally as well. Now it seems that anime/manga is more mainstream in the West, and they aren't reliant on big shounen due to a greater availability and the general aging of the demographics.

Hori's in the coveted position of having been just starting his blowup series while the others were midway through or already ending, so he was able to see their stumbles as a reader. Plus, despite his own admitted underestimation as to how long his arcs actually turn out to be, I think he actually has a full plan outlined for the entire series already. Well it's just opinions, personally i thought everything involving Sasuke after the chunnin exams was just garbage, so the only things i enjoyed of naruto after the exams were things that didn't involve Sasuke, which were very few and far between, like the Pain arc, which i think is when Naruto peaked and then immediately shit itself.

With Bleach i liked Bleach, but now that i look back on it i think most of the Hueco Mundo and Fake Karakura town arcs were actually pretty boring and dull, obviously it had some good moments, but overall i don't really look back at those arcs fondly. I think i actually enjoyed the Fullbringer arc and the start of the Quincy arc more, but i think the moment the monk died Bleach died with him, just was just nonsense and garbage after that.

Goddamn. Normally in battle shounens, "friends" are just battle comrades that hardly talk about problems outside the battlefield, but Hori made these guys into actual friends that you would find in an honest-to-goodness school setting. Also, Iida and Todoroki being Deku's support during school is a great way to show their interaction and development with him even if they aren't being spotlighted in the arc.

Loved the little interactions this chapter, but it was definitely a sort of in between chapter with all the panels with just text bubbles. I'm pretty sure Hori went as far as to reuse some art for certain panels. I recognize a lot of the images in this page. I guess Hori wanted to do a little passing of time in-universe to have the heroes find where Eri is but not spend more than one chapter doing so.
