Is it just me or has Shingeki no Kyojin completely lost its sense of direction?
Part of me wants to believe that because of monthly releases, I'm forgetting some important parts, but I feel as if the time skip completely destroyed the manga's story.
Can someone accurately summarize what happens leading up to (and following) the time skip?

It was obvious by that stage that Isayama was never going to make the Titans a legitimate threat anymore so why not expand the story beyond that?
