I'd probably watch Flip Flappers if people didn't only talk about the yuribait and how pretty it is. If that's all anyone can talk about then I figure it isn't anything interesting.

The back half of Flip Flappers is what makes it a bad anime. The opening episodic episodes are great, but once the plot takes center stage it nose dives. They didn't have a clue what they were doing.

Your shitty thread died after like 60 posts, why would you remake it?

You clearly didn't browse the threads when it was airing. The threads tend to be filled with a bunch of speculations, way more than about how pretty the art is. And the yuribait bitching is mainly because of that one faggot. And it's usually the much later threads.

Then why did so many westerners, at least on /a/, like it then? I kind of liked the show (at least initally) but its fanbase ended up loving the show as if it was the second coming of Christ or something. Almost cult-like in its devotion to the anime.

Did you see the threads?

IT became a circle jerk of people seeing this as a super deep show, with meanings to be found it the smallest of things.

I watched it, didn't mind it, but it wasn't that great, had some cool moments but was a mess in the end.
>>
>>156881652
To this day I still understand why it got so little promotion in Japan in the first place. Given that it was an original, the more promotions it should have got. Even YoI had somewhat more hype before it aired.

>Did you see the threads?
Yeah, and the small-but-vocal fanbase loved the show to the point of creepiness. They looked much like Kyousougigafags, only more numerous and more vocal.

Flipflappers just wasn't written well. Why do you write a useless character like the loli into a one cour series? The writing did nothing with her. What was the point of her? Time that went into the loli could've gone into anything else more usefully.

Love Live is shit because it's a shitty idolm@ster clone with worse writing and more objectionably no BEST IDORRUS. These days more of the idolshit they pump out is failing than printing sales, so maybe they'll stop thinking just shoving some jpop idols into something will make it sell after blunders like Idol Jihen (Prime Minister did nothing wrong. except the corrupt coordination of a city-wide traffic jam, I'll give you that one)
>>
>>156881853
>Time that went into the loli
What time? she had three lines and roughly a minute of screen time throughout the whole show, people just assumed she'd be important due to her blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in the OP.

Different writing conventions.
In the west, there's a holy goddamn rule of fiction writing (especially in scifi and fantasy) that you directly explain as little as possible, and that any explanation of the setting is deferred at least until act 2. If you get an act-1 infodump, your author doesn't know what they're doing. Western anime fans complain about this in anime all the goddamn time, but the nips do not.

"Show, don't tell" isn't something that's prioritized nearly as much in Japan, and they are far more accepting of infodumps in general and that sort of upfront "explain everything right away" sort of storytelling. They are averse to being kept in the dark about essential setting elements, like Flip Flappers did.

Japan disliked Flip Flapper's approach to storytelling because it deferred explanation too long. The west loved Flip Flapper's approach to storytelling because it didn't try to explain. But then the actual money-making arms of the franchise weren't marketed to the west, their primary vendor doesn't ship internationally, and most of their promotion of both the series and its merchandise was Japan-only, so the fact that the west liked it is obviously unplanned and unwelcome.
>>
>>156880903
No, I loved what they did with him in the later episodes.
>>
>>156882212
>Western anime fans complain about this in anime all the goddamn time, but the nips do not.
So is that why hipsters tend to love "deep shows"?

Also, when I said "lacked promotion", I was referring to Japan, not the West. Apparently, the show wasn't promoted well in Japan. Is ther eany reason for that?

You learn in a low level English uni class that you can't expect the reader to figure things out themselves. Good writers (off the top of my head, Tennessee Williams) balance reading at a surface level and subtleness that makes both reading and digging enjoyable.

So no, it isn't because of different writing conventions, but that the writer or director didn't make Flip Flappers didn't balance obscurity and "low brow" enjoyment, so it flopped hard, yet had a decent small cult following.

>They are averse to being kept in the dark about essential setting elements, like Flip
That isn't to say it can't work in Japan. Kemono Friends shows that Japan can be accepting of being kept in the dark in regard to the setting so long as they still have an incentive to care about it which may be due to the characters currently living in it. I think the key to having this method work however, is to have the cast be generally equally unaware of the setting of the show and to provide a bit of a disconnect between what the viewer is seeing and how the characters interact with their surroundings. If the viewer can infer about what has happened to lead up to the events of the show, they will be more interested in seeing if they were right or not. Speculation can go a long way in garnering interest in a series, and if there's plenty of room to speculate, there's definitely going to be a spread through word of mouth about the show to others.
>>
>>156883872
>Kemono Friends
KF spent most of its first episode with Serval explaining the setting to Kaban. It was a direct exposition dump that went over all of the important facets of what Friends are, how they come to be, what Sandstar is, what the layout of the Park is, what Ceruleans are, how Ceruleans are fought, and so on.

Most of this was covered in a straight monologue that spanned almost 10 minutes.
