it's really good. so many retards criticized it for having "out of place" heartwarming/uplifting sequences running parallel to the depressing parts, as if a show somehow can't do both for whatever reason.

the animation was sometimes strange (like smith's newspaper during his breakfast routine) but that's really the only complaint i have about it.

This is how Shaft has fooled so many people over the years. Zack Snyder does the same in Hollywood. The audience is easily enchanted by visual embellishments and think it's smart direction. It's not. Heavy hand is the right term. Unlike Rakugo, which exudes harmony and balance. The ego of the director don't overshadows the story.

Due to a fuck up, Souya gets separated from the president and he and Rei get stuck together for a night. They rent a hotel room, or more accurately Rei does. Souya is nearly helpless on his own and basically a much worse version of Rei. He's also gone like 90% deaf. Basically he's what Rei could have become if he hadn't met the sisters and gone full shogi autist.

I really don't understand what you mean by tonal-shifting. It's a story about someone's life experience. Everyone has moments that suddenly become funny or joyful when they were sad just moments before. I really enjoyed the fact that it didn't pretend otherwise. I think this show never glorified sadness, it only presented it as it exists for people. Even with Kyouka, she had humorous scenes, because she grew up with Rei. To each his own, but I loved that about the show

I think you've missed what the show is trying to do. 3gatsu no Lion is a character study of Rei, an individual who has lived with rejection, loneliness and loss for the majority of his life. Why would suddenly being thrown into an environment of unaffected love, like the Kawamoto sisters' household, be anything but a jarring swing towards "pure circus"? The metaphorical tug-of-war between Rei's depression and the warmth and vibrancy of those around him is an integral part of his growth and development throughout the series. That's why the tonal shifts being so sweeping and obvious actually works quite nicely; it fits the purpose of the narrative.
