Pumps are too loud. The TDP of good GPUs/CPUs went down recently. Obviously you're not gonna cool a 1080 passively, but e.g. 1060 still offers acceptable framerates. CPUs are even easier, lots of them with low TDP out there. Just get a case that has more holes than metal in it, ideally two fan grilles on top, because it mostly works by convection. Shit's big too, especially CPU heatsink so case can't be too small. Also you have to find aftermarket heatsinks and fit hem yourself (can be hard depending on GPU model).

Hot air moves upwards. Obviously you need special heatsinks, even the best ones designed for active cooling won't work this way (too small distance between fins to allow good air passage with no fan). Also pay attention whether heatsink is meant to be used vertically or horizontally.
It may be easier and cheaper just to get a barely audible active cooling, but I have a very quiet room, so every sound is irritating.
Supposedly where shit gets real is having enough luck to get a PSU that has inaudible capacitors (I got lucky though).

I have 8 TB of anime currently archived. It is not simply just random shit, though. I've spent over 4 years determining what to add to it, downloading, and catalouging what I feel to be worthwhile anime for archiving.

The anime is organized by main title (ex. "Gundam") with subtitles (ex. "08th MS Team") in subfolders.

Each subfolder has a "qaulity info.txt" file which lists FILE INFO (a/v quality info), SERIES INFO (director, year, genres, etc.), SUMMARY, and DOWNLOAD SOURCE.

Each subfolder also has a preview image, representing the series.

The collection spans 4 external drives, with offsite backups. On each drive, in the root folder, is a "Catalouge" folder, which contains a folder for all preview images and "quality info.txt" files. The preview images are named in "main title - subtitle.jpg" convention, allowing the collection to be browsed alphabetically by title in image representation.

A pdf of all folders (and thus all titles) also exists. You can thus browse via three ways: text file overview, images, or detailed file info.

2. I can watch my animu on my TV, smartphone, PC or tablet - all from a central library. I can start watching an episode on my TV and resume later on a PC

3. Sync - my tablet automatically downloads predefined episodes from the central server for offline watching, then deletes them after I am done with them.

4. Transcoding - my TV can't handle 10 bit or h.265 files. Emby solves this.

Overall Emby is rather good, but if you are watching media from only one device, I can't see a reason to switch to it over the Kodi.

Go find some reviews for passive heatsinks if you don't believe me, but it manages well, with temps within what stock coolers manage (at least as long as you don't go past the recommended TDP, like sticking it on hottest Bulldozer). So no, you won't damage your computer, but you also won't get temps good enough to brag to your friends. Depending on what you want it may or may not be a good choice.

If you play files directly (no transcoding) they work great. Trouble begins when it's transcoding files for an offline sync because Emby harsubs the first subtitle into the file. You can always send intact file by setting quality to original.
