Whatever happened to anime EDs changing every episode? Some shows

Nothing happened, it was never a frequent occurrence to begin with.

I don't think this was ever at all common. It was kinda a thing in 2009-2010 (HOTD, the two seasons of Sora no Otoshimono, Oreimo), but then it died out. The last shows I can think of that did this were Oreimo and Hayate no Gotoku Cuties in Spring 2013.

Besides, Bakemonogatari (the first series, at least) was based on a series of short stories, and they used a different OP for each story. Most other shows use one big chunk of source material.

What's funny is that Eromanga Sensei didn't do it when Oreimo "popularized" it.

I assume because of budget and scheduling reasons. You'd have to bring more people on to the production. SHAFT can do it because Shinbo is really close to the studios responsible for the Monogatari EDs.

I'm pretty sure Oreimo itself covered why having changing EDs is a hassle. If its not a huge production then its not worth the effort, commissioning songwriting and animation is a pain in the ass and puts a strain on the production.
