I personally rate this 7/10 because the animation was good (the story surely isnt)

I've watched around 800 anime. And to be honest this was one of the most beautiful anime I have watched. It was extremely relatable for someone who has been in love and lost it. I don't expect younger anime fans to understand the importance this anime holds and that is fine. I find it ironic people throwing the term newfag around. It seems like the people who dislike this are newfags who still think mainstream anime is BS or something.

It's getting good reviews because critics, and almost everyone else, are better at noticing and empathizing with normal human emotions, specifically love, than your autistic self is capable of. This is a movie about feelings and relationships, both of which are alien to you. I don't blame you for being underwhelmed by a story with limited tits and explosions. To be fair, that's what Shinkai thinks of all his projects. If you read any interviews you know this was a deeply personal film he spent 5 years making. But even then he doesn't figure it a masterpiece. I mean, he started off animating porn.

No one in this industry has that much of an ego, save for legends like Miyazaki and Oshii. Probably a good thing. When you start getting to egotistical and self-assured you start making trash like Ponyo.

I suppose this creates an even larger irritation for Shinkai. Being compared to an aging man that has grown into bitterness and apathy coming from an aging design aesthetic. I can't really blame Miyazaki too much seeing the current state of commercialization in Japanese animation and the cancer that is mainstream otaku culture. Fans have lost their standards.

Im gonna see it again this week, some more theaters around me picked it up.
