Once again reminding me of how much better Homura's take on the series is. The exchange in the first couple panels was a new addition present in neither the novel nor the anime, and implies in just a few sentances that Charlotte can see right through him and disapproves of how he pushes everyone away to focus on his own self loathing (and how he doesn't realise it's hurtful to them), but is willing to give him his space for now. He credits his characters with a modicum of actual fucking depth and allows them to *be* characters instead of cardboard cutouts of the harem mold.

In Tatenashi's audio drama, it is kinda implied that once Ichika finally decides to be with someone (he himself did say that he's going out with Tatenashi although he didn't clarify that he's going out with Tatenashi to do some shopping), the other girls would just bow out of the race and respect his decision (as seen with Houki and Rin).

But, ignoring that implication, it's better to go for Chifuyu or Maya in terms of defending herself and Ichika should the broken-hearted haremettes attempt to kill him and his girlfriend.

Although, going full homo with Dan would be the perfect choice since it explains why he doesn't think their advance is something and really does think of them as just friends. Plus, it's a funny reason why he can use the IS in the first place.

There's not too much to tell. Her family circumstances are less fantastical and more mundane than Houki's. Her family ran a restaurant that Ichika ended up going to a lot when he was younger because Chifuyu was often working late, and they started to get along, helped by his defending her from kids bullying her for her heritage. Then her parents got divorced and her father got custody and moved to China. Being uprooted like that in conjunction with going through a divorce really had an impact on her, and she yearns for what she sees as the glory days of her childhood before it got taken away, so she clings to anything left of it, like her childish mannerisms or her girlhood crush on that nice boy who kept coming round. This is why her dream in World Purge is pretty much just that. Parents together, living in Japan, going through normal school life with Ichika.

Really? Interesting. I feel the same way about Charlotte. Her cooler temperament is obviously a tonic to Ichika, and the discovery of her own parent issues really struck a chord in him due to his own childhood. It probably helps that the series took a whole volume to develop a bond between them (and forget about it afterward, but hey, it's IS).

I just think that Houki is far too invested in Ichika to have a healthy relationship. She has that mindset some people fall into where they think just being in a relationship will be enough to solve all their problems and make everything perfect, and it rarely ends well.

This is also sort of an interesting comparison with Charlotte, because while this is true, it's also relative. Ichika is cooler than Houki, but only because she's got a hair trigger temper. Houki X Ichika could have codependency issues if you look at it from that angle, but it's hard to say that her goal is just a relationship. Her World Purge scenario involves family life, even though both of them had all of that baggage in their pasts. Sometimes after a turbulent past, you just want things to be mundane and normal, even if it's to make up from lost time. Even her scenario in the wedding special involves mention of a kiddo.

With someone like her, if she has a good foil to keep her focused, motivated, and happy, then great things happen. If someone is manipulative, takes advantage of those feelings, or rubber bands between supporting and pushing away, then yeah, you'd see co-dependency issues and other things manifesting on her part. Ichika is too damned nice for that to happen I would think.

While Ichika has a temper too (Laura under the VT system for example), Houki is also not afraid to be assertive and slapped some sense into him, even if all she could do from there is cheer him on. At the same time, she also admires him when he shows a stronger side of things. They'd probably be equals more than anything at the end of the day, or Houki would start to defer more to a stronger him, which is what she wants.

Char is pretty awesome for him too, I think being with either girl would result in them bring out different nuances from Ichika and vice versa.

Tabane is off, but you have to wonder what all happened in the past. Especially if Madoka was somehow part of things. People with very high IQs tend to get more and more eccentric as you go more and more standard deviations towards higher IQs. Things can only be so 'normal' for whomever when you frame it in context of the past, but I guess that's what makes these discussions interesting.

I'm not actually sure this would be the case. Houki would definitely have dependency issues (in point of fact she already sort of does), but Ichika's most defining trait is his vehement aversion to depending on other people because he absolutely loathes the feeling that he's burdening them. An important factor to consider here is how his own issues would affect things. Nah, I think that ties into it. Having children with your beau is part of the dream. The problem being that World Purge is just that, a dream. Really, if she's going to hook up with him and have it work she'd need to accept his negative qualities too, and thus far they've been what sets her off because it disappoints her he doesn't live up to her ideal.

My thoughts on her potential development are that her whole life has come to revolve around this one person, so what would do her good is to loose the tunnel vision and realise that it's now in her power to decide how her own life goes, and that she can find some way to be happy whether or not Ichika reciprocates.

I must say thanks, I really appreciate this conversation. It's bizarre to have (what is effectively) a Houkifag/Charfag exchange that's not only cordial, but has both on the same page, but nice.

Even though Homura deserves a lot of credit for some really masterful bits of implication via small amounts of dialogue that frame the series in a deeper light, in truth a lot of the good moments from his manga (like the bit where Ichika realises mid rant that he's talking as much about himself as Charlotte) actually originate from the novels and just didn't make the cut to the anime. Believe it or not Yumizuru can (or could) write well. It was him that set the groundwork for it after all, Homura just read beneath the surface and brought it up.

Another touch of his that I like is his habit of cutting down on the slapstick by removing it, or having it happen off-panel on the occasion that it stays in, or downgrading it from IS usage to just a normal physical exchange. It makes everyone seem a whole lot less psychotic. When it's just a sound effect from off-panel or a dope slap rather than a gut punch or laser beam it's far less jarring and absurd.

Maturity would tie in with any of the girls really, at age 16, there's still a lot of growing up to do, and people definitely change quite a bit, sometimes in ways that affect them profoundly moving forward.

I think he'd man up eventually and do whatever needed to be done to make one of them happy, while the other would pull their weight too, negative qualities and all.

The other side to Ichika's issues is that feeling like he's being relied on could pull him into putting his best effort into a relationship because he has an opportunity to be the one helping/protecting someone, and not the other way around. In that sense, he and Houki could ladder off of each other nicely since they both believe in strength, but with Ichika's sense of it being more of a guiding influence. It goes back to the difference of power for the sake of power, versus power for the sake of protecting something. That second one is scary as hell for anyone on the receiving end. If the two of them ever hit that same wavelength in an IS battle against a strong opponent, it'd be pretty awesome to be animated.

It's been a good discussion for sure, always nice to go beyond the typical shallow character remarks and look at stuff on a deeper level.

On that note, time to get back to work on translating chapter 22 for you all.

Similarly, he and Charlotte mesh very well character wise because his deal is wanting to be there for and support the people he cares about, and hers is being isolated and alone and needing someone to be there for her. He'd finally be able to accept his own strength, and she'd have someone to be there for her and not be lost and alone.

Ichika is sorely underrated really. He's deep in the self loathing spiral, but unlike almost anybody else he's passionately driven to better himself as a person and leave it.

I always appreciate a character that tries to get out of this or pulls it off. Being aware of it and doing nothing versus being aware and working to get better is what makes it great.

I figure the girls would have each others' backs at the end of the day, but there's some friendliness there too. They showed some group dynamic in battle at the end of season 2 when Ichika was sidelined. Unfortunately once he was back in battle, the badass factor went away.

Part of what made me really enjoy IS aside from the mechs was how much it reminded me of Sakura Taisen with the group dynamic and girls from different countries. Definitely some nostalgia there for me. Pic related from Homura's Twitter, Houki could easily pull off a Sakura Shinguji.

Even better! For a while it seemed like we'd simply never get to see Homura's take on the rest of the series, but then along came you. I was damn pleased when I checked a couple weeks ago and discovered the project to be alive again. Your efforts are appreciated.

There are a lot of great things about Ichika. I'm quite fond of his remarkable maturity, wisdom and sense of responsibility, and you can see how his life influenced them. Most people in his situation would be inclined to resent their parents for their actions, and while he does as well, he also uses it to motivate himself to be better than that. But he's also a kid and not made of stone, so he often does rash or inadvisable things. But he tries, damn it. It makes me sigh a bit inside whenever I see him disparaged as some variation on "Dense beta fuck" because he's so much more than that.

Charlotte and Laura are obvious, but I also rather enjoy the odd friendship that developed between Rin and Cecelia. Be good to see some other combinations interact though.

Thinking about your remarks on Houki and Ichika working together properly, I suppose it's only fair given that we've already seen that with Charlotte and it was pretty cool. They managed it a lot easier partly because they gelled well due to their fast friendship, partly because Charlotte is queen of tactical flexibility. His style is by necessity and by own nature a risky all or nothing one that leaves him exposed and vulnerable, and she is well suited to covering that vulnerability and always having his back.

I could go on about them for far too long, there are a million little things about their dynamic I could gush about.

To be entirely fair (and I'm most likely putting a lot more thought into this than the author), this could all be puppet theater to avoid controversy. Look at NATO for example: the supreme allied commander is always an American, and always a normal general (meaning he's subordinate to the US president despite being the supreme commander of all European armies). In this way America has effectively turned Europe into a collection of American protectorates. But how do they avoid getting shit for this from anyone except De Gaulle? By putting its HQ in Brussels and by making its Chairman (the "face" of the organization) always a European. This is all windowdressing to make sure people don't see the obvious: America is running the show.

The IS project could be the same: it's an entirely new weapon that utterly transforms warfare to the point of making older weapons except ICBs nearly obsolete. Can you even begin to imagine the diplomatic crisis if only America were to be allowed to build it and research it? There'd be a veritable arms race instead, with every major power (Soviets and China certainly, maybe also India, the UK and France) trying to start their own projects. For all other major powers in the world to even agree to the "only one country can research/build them" stipulation, the project would need to be based in a seemingly neutral country that's actually heavily under American control. Japan is the ideal candidate for this: it's a country so deep under American influence that America effectively dictates its foreign policy, but appears neutral and is high-tech enough to justify the IS project being based there.

But again: I'm putting way more thought into this than the author himself so feel free to disregard my opinion.
