There's nothing written on what an opening/intro should do. Personally, I think it should climatize and simulate the ambient of the show. If it's a fantasy show it's ok to be epic or whatever. In the case of the first Death Note opening, it sounds childish, probably showing what Light feels when he first finds the Death Note, it actually fits pretty well.
