Anno made NGE in 1995, finished the story in 1997. It was a smash hit, people loved it, and Rei was everyone's favorite character which Anno hated because his personal favorite was Asuka, a character that's an amalgam of his other favorite characters from other series. He becomes bitter, doesn't really want much to do with Evangelion and everything is half-hearted, he keeps being sour over Rei's popularity, etc...

Enter the Rebuilds: Anno's giant retcon to the original anime series where Evangelion gets flipturned upside down. Out the door goes plot, character, quality and everything just to make Asuka look cool and Rei look bad. Anno butters it up thick by giving Asuka lesbian lover yurifans can fantasize about and gives the waifufags the feeling of smug superiority by making Asuka into a super-strong angel-girl or something.

In the meantime, Rei is decried as a clone of Yui, is shown to have zero intelligence, and is more or less written out of the story. Because none of this makes sense whatsoever, because you can't make a story like this without making huge leaps of logic and retconning everything, naturally Rebuild sucks for everyone except Asuka fans and Kaworu fans at this stage.

Final will not answer anything important because it will reveal it all as a poorly written farce.

Merchendaising aside, the enternity of rebiulds are are made mostly around "gotcha" moments, impact of majority of which is entirely dependant on watching the original. You expect shit and then you get something else.

1 is mostly a reatelling of ep1-6, but you still get one major game changer: people know about Adam\Lilith in the basement, which gives a good chunck of questions about nervs inner operations this time around.

2 gives: Mari, controllable berserker in a way of beastmode, Asuka having different surname and getting injured instead of Toji, cryptic Kaworu. It ends with, again false preview, of a bunch of shit that would get you hyped for some answears\worldbuilding: Mari meeting multi Reis, Kaji’s fate, Gendo’s keikaku. The ending itself is big holyshit moment, because it first flips the scene from the show and gives audience a properly motivated and proactive Shinji, and THEN subverts it by Kaworu both reestablishing status quo and implying the whole sequel theory.

3 is a culmination of all of this. What you get is entirely different from whatever was established in the show.
From the top of my head:

It's not a theory, it's a fact. The Rebuilds never made Rei the main love interest, that is just normal Asuka fan paranoia that manifests itself the second Rei has screentime. The third movie undermines any form of love interest she was anyway, and not only that, continues to push Asuka to the top. Cutting Asuka's screentime is done so they can focus more on ruining Rei.

Anno and every other writer knows that it's better to deliver characterization that has room for fans to play with, which is why Asuka has less screentime. They have employed dozens of writing techniques and targeted multiple fanbases in order to make Asuka more popular.

Don't forget that Rei being ruined = pandering to Asuka fans.

Stabbing 13 is part of the ritual for the 3rd impact. Kawuro purposly activated his angle powers to cause his death and stop the impact, shinji was still a trigger.
Why was shinji still a trigger?
Well I think it's due to the first Rei. Remember when Gendo was purposly trying to get Shinji and Rei to have a connection? It was so one day Rei would be absorbed into shinji. This happened during the end of Rebuild 2. How can I speculate this? Well all I got is that The new Rie was able to contact shinji telepathically in 3.0. Shinji has Lillith's soul inside him now.
Mark 9 is an upgrade and possible host for the adams. Other than that I dunno.
