I just finished rewatching it. I got jewed though, got told on the site that it was subbed, was dubbed. Wasn't exactly bad but didn't have the emotional impact it would have had in Japanese. Though I at least now know what the dub's like, so I don't have to watch it again later.

That said, this being my first Shinkai movie, what else should I watch to fill the void?

So I'm guessing the reason they scrapped 20-year-old Mitsuha is to prevent the issue of having 2 Mitsuhas in one scene (The one in Taki's body and the one waiting for him).

I mean, imagine if 20-year-old Mitsuha finally meets 17-year-old Taki, but it was actually Mitsuha inside him? Weird.

I also feel that 25-year-old Mitsuha works better as an ending because it shows that they moved on with their lives while still searching and waiting for each other. If it turns out that 17-year-old Taki returned back to Tokyo and quickly walked across 20-year-old-Mitsuha, it would have unsettling and somewhat cheap.

Funny isn't it? Back before a majority of the board had a chance to watch it, either in theaters or the rips, they were shitposting about it breaking all those records.

Now that most of the people in these threads have had a chance to see it, they recognize it's a really good movie, aside from a few militant shitposters who probably lost the ability to enjoy any form of entertainment years ago.

It's a shame because I've liked some of Shinkai's other works, too.
>>
>>155951324
5cm is pretty highly overrated. Several of his other films are better, both from a story and a technical standpoint.

Your Name > Children Who Chase Lost Voices > Beyond the Clouds > Garden of Words > 5cm

it was alright, animation and sound were great, but the plot and character development felt rushed and not fully fleshed out
also, fuck you people who joined in on clapping at the end of the movie
>>
>>155951324

It really needs a second viewing, you really should find time to.
>>
>>155951453
>but the plot and character development felt rushed and not fully fleshed out
A lot of that is just not paying attention to detail. There's a lot of little character tidbits you don't notice unless you're really observant, or rewatching.

I think for how short the movie was, they jammed a considerable amount of characterization in. The amount of body language they animated is something I haven't really seen in many other anime.
>>
>>155951453
>clapping at the end
Thank fuck the early morning matinee I saw it at was only about half full, and nobody did that cringey shit.

You could tell ~75% of the crowd were properly suppressing their powerlevel.

>>155951453
>felt rushed and not fully fleshed out
The fuck do you expect from 105 minutes? Given the time constraints of the medium, I thought they did a great job with the (few) montages showing time passing and the development of the story.
>>
>>155949596
Voices of a distant star.
>>
>>155951587
>body language they animated
This. By far the most impressive improvement Shinkai has made since Garden of Feet was in the really dynamic character motion. There's always little movements and motions in every scene that add a ton of detail.

Really looking forward to whatever he does next.
>>
>>155951597
>The fuck do you expect from 105 minutes?

Are you really implying you need more than 105 minutes to tell Kimi no Na Ha's shitty story? There are thousands of fantastic movies that are shorter than that.
>>
>>155951452
Don't belittle 5cm so much.
The artwork and direction were top notch. The story wasn't satisfying but that was on purpose. It wasn't like he did a poor job of telling what would have been a good story. The story was always going to be unsatisfying and he did a good job of telling it.

You can't really use that as a positive argument for 5cm, when it's a consistent feature of everything he's done.

Or are you actually trying to argue that the story and presentation in 5cm was better than, say, Beyond the Clouds?

The monogatari franchise is very much targeted explicitly to a weeb/otaku audience compared to Shinkai's stuff. That really shouldn't be surprising.

I like furiko as much as the next guy, but there's a difference between making a caricature and trying some semblance of realism. Abstraction, emotion, and detail are all things you have to balance.

I'll defend Kimi no Na Wa's characterization to any end. In the thousands of anime I've seen few if any match the amount of depth these characters are given in the first half of the movie. Mitsuha more than Taki, but he gets his focus later on. Everything from her posture, to the way she walks, to the Rice fetish scene and the way her eyes dart for a second before focusing again. For a body-swap movie, having such recognizable gestures is even more important due to the fact that you're going to be watching characters outside their bodies.

>>155951803
I mean, for any movie people get involved in different rates. I got far more involved than usual, more involved than any movie has ever made me, and I've seen my fair share. More than 90% of /a/. I can relate to the empty feeling and the sense of being unfulfilled, and watching the characters made me long for that kind of connection.

Honestly, watch it again. There's a lot of subtle foreshadowing that people miss out the first time. I honestly don't know how people can lack any involvement in the film, with such concentrated characterization. But even if you personally are just broken somehow, you can at least appreciate the craft and the effort they put in to make the characters motion part of their character design. Reminds me of TokiKake, but with far more interesting protagonists.

And Honestly, Kizu sucked. I loved the original Bake, not so much the sequels, due to Oishi. But now that he's back directing Kizu it's these amazing Oishi scenes with extremely dull pacing issues and dragged out sequences, seemingly just to pad the movie. It's like nuggets of gold in a river of refuse.

The voice actors in Beyond the Clouds were really quite weak in comparison to 5cm.
Beyond the Clouds certainly had a more satisfying story than 5cm but that doesn't take away from the improved directing from Shinkai in 5cm.

>>
>>155952109
I agree that the character animation and design was fantastic, but I have a hard time actually believing a character is real when the world they inhabit is so flimsily constructed around the dramatic twists, and all the events in the movie feel like they're the result of trying to make every climax so over the top as to feel like a parody of drama movies.
The entire movie just felt too artificial to me thanks to the series of contrivances that is the plot, which ruined the believability of the characters.

my nigga

just near-future enough to pull off the sci-fi in a believable way, absolutely jawdropping background work, great character development, and a great story too

one of my favorite soundtracks as well

the only real downside being his character design/art used to be pretty bad, so they're a bit plainer and more ...rigid? than newer works

maybe rigid is the wrong term, but his older character models were far plainer and more one-dimensional

the background work and story make up for it, but it's more noticeable once you've seen his newer stuff then go back to rewatch
>>
>>155952613
I mean, what was contrived? The time travel? Yeah, that was a little weird, but it was pretty heavily foreshadowed. The time twist? The characters get constant hints about the time, from mismatched dates to phones to weird scheduling to the GODDAMN comet. It certainly isn't handwaved, they're just too busy enjoying themselves to notice this shit.

Obviously it's not as if the plot is perfect, but some of the contrivances people talk about are addressed by the movie, and it's not as if they're not foreshadowed very heavily, or hinted at. Even without calender's, it's not as if there's a dearth of evidence shown to the characters, they just don't notice or ignore them. If that doesn't sound like teenagers, I don't know what does.

The movie had a hard time coming over to the West outside of film festivals and cons because it's still doing extraordinary well in Japanese theaters. Beyond the Clouds was good but Shinkai has improved since then.
His newer works are clearly better and Beyond the Clouds gets overshadowed by Voices from a Distant Star, which was his breakthrough sort of work, and 5cm/Garden where he really matured.

The music remains as some of the best though. Beyond the Clouds and 5cm both have that because Tenmon.

Really? If you'd said
>they noticed but every time they woke up they'd forgotten that detail
an excuse I just now came up with you'd have made a better case.
To me it's absolutely unbelievable that neither of them ever noticed anything regarding the date or year. The movie could've had them notice and forget about it and thus follow the exact same story, but it didn't. Because of weird shit like this the incredibly dramatic revelations to the characters (I'm assuming the audience isn't dumb as a brick and picked up on at least some of the obvious foreshadowing) feels incredibly contrived, which is my main problem with the movie as those moments are clearly supposed to be the high notes.

I'll say that I enjoyed the calmer moments for the most parts, it's just the dramatic scenes with the ridiculous music and contrived setups that made it incredibly painful to watch.

The time travel may have been foreshadowed, but that does not make it less contrived in its execution. There are no consistent rules as to when or how it happens, which again leads to this feeling of the artificiality of the drama because its arbitrary nature reminds me of the hand of the author forcibly guiding every event in the most overdramatic direction.

I think one of the character songs (the instrumentals) got played twice, which was a little annoying, so I guess if that's what you meant then I agree with you. Gave the impression that they didn't bother to license/write more than a handful of songs, even though they obviously did.

>To me it's absolutely unbelievable that neither of them ever noticed anything regarding the date or year.
How often do you really see the current year being referenced in life? I assume these kids aren't all following politics intently. And the few things relating to the year that do come through naturally, like the comet or day of the week issues, the characters ignore for the most part because they really don't care. The idea that it might be a different time isn't even a possibility to them, they just chalk it up to being some mistake they made when the day of the week shifts. Really isn't that bizarre.

>The time travel may have been foreshadowed, but that does not make it less contrived in its execution. There are no consistent rules as to when or how it happens,
Because it only happens once. It's weird to think about it as time travel, even. Because it's not. It's just another body swap, but aided by Shinto wine, whose mechanisms are explained by grandma. The movie obviously doesn't have a lore explaining exactly how these things work, but you get a vague enough idea of why, as leaving the wine leaves a part of you, and drinking wine takes a part of that into yourself, etc etc.

It seems like you're more focused on realism than verisimilitude, but realism is never a focus in a film like this. Apart from long-running space operas, movies don't tend to go into detail looking at these subjects.

>hand of the author forcibly guiding every event in the most overdramatic direction.
Playing a sappy pop song during a disaster scene is over-dramatic? That's playing off the contrast, same as FALLING DOWN in EoE. The only part that might be overly dramatic is the ending, but that's preceded by a calmer section, and the point of the scene is frantic emotion. So it works, in that sense.

At the most basic level, a lot of magic shit happened in the film. All that stuff getting erased fits perfectly with what happened elsewhere, they completely forget about each other. The reason that it only happened while Taki-kun was looking at it, I blame on artistic license and/or magic.
The biggest plot hole I can see is why Mitsu-Taki didn't tell one of Taki's friends "hey my name is Mitsuha and I live at 6969 Itomori Village Chief Drive, Itomori, pls tell Taki-kun tomorrow k thnx", would they have remembered? I'm guessing not, as that was the whole point of the film.

>Well it's a beautiful film in it's own right, and that was by far the worst offender.
I noticed at least a few scenes that were really really bad (for a movie with a director of such stature). It IS a beautiful movie, but it's marred by animation issues. Shinkai even said so when he was talking about the film.

>>155943299
>You can easily find the answers by looking at multiple lreviews on imdb, RT, MAL, and various other websites. I don't understand why people keep questioning why people praise it so much when you can easily do some research and find out yourself.
When I say I don't know, I mean I don't understand their reasoning. They can say it's Shinkai's best movie, but I think part of the plot was hamfisted, and it was too dramatic for what it was. The music (especially the OP) didn't fit at times, and the pervy 90's OVA throwbacks felt wrong. Did they really need to show Mitsuha's panties when she was running, and again when she fell down? Did they need to put in the homoerotism? Neither of them were plot relevent, and they didn't really add to the plot, and the panty shot was so poorly timed that it almost ruined the tension of that scene. The meteor falling to Earth was borderline fantastical. Mitsuha's reasoning for going to Tokyo made no sense. I could nitpick more, but to sum it up, the small things really degraded the overall experience from being a 10/10 to an 8/10. I can understand it being highly rated, but Garden of Words is a much more serious, adult, well animated, concise film. If you want to disagree then that's fine.

Either of their phone lock screens don't show the year

>or a calendar,

>or walk around my city probably.
Oh, you're in Greenwich?

But either way, these are beside the point. The characters DO come into contact with indication that the year might be off. But they don't really think about it because they don't even figure that's a remote possibility. Weird new phone? Must be city tech. Mitsuha's comet not there? Who knows what she's talking about, must be a metaphor. See, even when she explicitly tells him, more or less, that she's three years in the past, he doesn't pick up on it. Because neither of them considers that a possibility.

If a little grey alien walked up to you on the street, you'd probably think it was a costume. People have to be receptive to an absurd idea, even if there's evidence for it.

Something along those lines. It doesn't really show her explicit reaction other than getting a haircut and being depressed for most of the next day.

You make it sound like it was in there by accident. This isn't live action. No one was filming what just so happened to happen. They had to storyboard the panty shot, keyframe it, tween it, paint it, and composite it. It was intentional, it was noticeable, and it detracted from the scene. And it wasn't like there weren't dozens of equally good angles they could use to not show panties.

Please don't be disingeneous
>>
>>155954836
Technically they were well past the date that she died because they were body swapping on the same date, just different years. His diary should have been deleted at least a month before.

But it could have been more symbolic of the musubi between them slowly fading over time and it got to the point then where it deleted the diary entries.

Either way it's not something that it supposed to make complete sense because it's fucking musubi.

Trying to watch this movie has been hell for me.

Went to a theater, bought tickets for the subbed version, but they showed the dubbed version. Went to management to ask what was going on and they told me that Funimation shit the bed and sent them the footage with the wrong labels on them. Some dubbed were showing subbed, some subbed were showing dubbed. They said that they would go and change the footage for our theater to the subbed version, so I go and sit back down. 5 minutes in, not noticing any changes, I go back and ask what was going on and they tell me that they had asked the audience of 10 people if they were okay with dubbed, and they said yes, so they didn't change it. Left pissed.

Going back Monday for round two, going to make a scene if they don't fix it this time.

I watch most of my anime out of season and on my own. I still like being able to watch it in the comfort of my own home, and since Shinkai's works are generally super pretty, I'd like to be able to take screenshots etc. anyway. Even if I don't share them to /a/ I guess. I used pic related from Kotonoha No Niwa as desktop wallpaper for a while.
Also, cinemas have other people.
>>
What is it about anime films that makes /a/ use the English titles? Is it that if a director was established before more recent times like Miyazaki or Shinkai people will continue to use English titles just because nobody wants to refer to 5 Centimeters per Second as Byousoku 5 Centimeter or Spirited Away as Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi and look like a massive weeaboo? This leads to problems like having to call Kimi no Na wa "Your Name" which is worse on every level unlike the former examples which are fine. I guess you can be inconsistent about it if you're not comparing his films in the same post, but you can't just go around using "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" and Kimi no Na wa together without looking ridiculous, so that defaults to using English titles for everything.
>>
>>155954942

There weren't all that many alternatives though.

The obvious intent was to show Mitsuha from an angle below her own POV and sligthly to the rear while she was riding the bike upward, clearly emphasizing her uphill struggle to reach the summit. This is an extremely common camera angle for this purpose.

The problem is that the short length of her skirt made it impossible to realistically portray any camera angle below the body without revealing a pantyshot.

And I expect Shinkai presumed this would only underline the urgency of Taki's rush to the summit; he was going so quickly he simply didn't care (and had no reason to, given that no one else was around). Shinkai (correctly, IMO) made the decision to take the better camera angle and the more realistic animation over temporarily lengthening the skirt arbitrarily for that scene, which would no doubt elicit different complaints entirely anyway.
>>
>>155956024
Nobody calls it "Your Name" here. And who cares what other people call it. It's Kimi No Na wa, nothing more to it.
>>
>>155956075
There's tons of examples in this very thread, especially in comparison posts.
>>
>>155955953
It's not bad. It's simply disappointing. Of every single expectation I had it only hit one. The soundtrack was very good. However:
1. The visuals were not as good as the garden of words.
2. The story didn't make sense
3. It didn't feel emotionally impactful at all (even if you're supposed to ignore its flaws, as it's a movie "for the heart" whatever that means)
4. It didn't make me cry
5. I don't feel like rewatching it.

It's really not a good movie. It isn't bad, but there is absolutely no reason for it to be so hyped. Even more with the mainstream audience given that the movie starts with fanservice and interjects it at the worst possible times. That isn't something that works with a movie. In a show it's fine but a movie needs to establish its tone at the beginning and if it doesn't it already failed from that point. Open a movie with a pantyshot (as this movie did) and you'd imagine it to be an ecchi movie. Take instead something like Wolf Children, which has a interesting romance at the start to set that the movie will be very moderate in tone, or Disappearance of Haruhi which starts very cold and stays very cold. Kimi no na wa didn't even accomplish that.

It isn't bad, but it's very disappointing. Especially as a fan of Shinkai's works. I only hope that he either hires a writer for his next movie or goes back to his old style, because I really don't respect him anymore as a writer.

Of course, I understand wanting to take screenshots, but you'll be able to do that later anyway. And it's exactly because of the visual quality of Shinkai's works that you should take the opportunity to watch this on a giant screen. It hasn't received inordinate critical praise about its looks for nothing.

>Also, cinemas have other people.
Here I suspect I'll have a harder time convincing you, but I'll just say my audience experiences so far have been mostly good/great. That means they've been engaged in and reacting to the movie, mind you.

>>
>>155955491

While there is always a bit less to the notion of "popular wisdom" as people might seem to believe, I think it should be reasonably clear that this movie made *a lot of people* feel things, and the scale of its financial success and the general tone of discussion of these threads should serve as exhibits A and B in that regard.

To argue against that is to make perhaps the ultimate "No True Scotsman" fallacy, as no logical argument can be made that it has "no aspects that beget a popular movie." By every metric, from sales to reviews, it has been an enormous and undeniable success and has been enormously popular.

The truth hurts sometimes, anon.
>>
>>155956228
If your memory isn't perfect you won't remember it the 2nd time around either. If you forgot it then you forgot it because it wasn't memorable. Seeing it a 2nd time won't make it any more memorable.
What could possibly be hidden? There were no background cameos, no hidden references, nothing that could be missed as long as you were paying attention. There is no value to rewatching this movie.

>>
>>155956238
But how then? What am I supposed to feel? The movie never felt like it did anything to change what I was thinking in the moment. It simply existed and I watched it. It was pretty and had good music, but I can't say anything else about it simply because it wasn't memorable nor did it make me feel anything, and I don't understand how it made others feel anything.
Even more so because Shinkai's other works were significantly more emotionally impactful. There he knew exactly how to present the movie to really make it hit hard, and it did. Here it didn't, so why all of a sudden is this the movie that got big, and not his other more critically acclaimed works?

Or because you want to re-experience the way it made you feel, to the extent possible. I've re-read large segments of books/manga I read as a kid like Harry Potter or Negima not because I missed anything deep, but because it reminds me how I felt when I first read them and because I honestly just like reading them.
>>
>>155956346
I try to pay attention when watching stuff, yes. Maybe I might miss something because I'm not Japanese nor can I speak the language, but I'm not going to notice that on a rewatch anyway because when I do I still have yet to become Japanese or learn the language.
I'm not insulting you in any respect here, but I feel like if you missed these things then you simply might not have been paying attention.

>It isn't worth it to rewatch it because it's going to be the same, or even more likely it'll be dimished because you no longer have any suspense. You know what happens so the entire time you're just waiting for things to happen rather than taking it in.

You will never be able to re-experience something the same way you did the first time. It's just not something you can do. With a movie it's even harder, because due to how short they are it's unlikely you'll forget it within a reasonable period of time.
Rereading those things you read as a kid still ties into what I said before. You usually do it because you now have different experiences and can see things differently from how you were a kid. However, Harry Potter is also incredibly surface level.
If you are even thinking of rewatching something like Kimi no na wa or rereading Harry Potter it's more worth to wait a few years than doing it immediately. Doing it immediately might even worsen your impression.

I disagree. I knew the spoilers before watching it the first time so I didn't get emotional during it. I just got back from my second viewing an hour ago and it was definitely better than the first time for a few reasons:
1. I was more invested in the characters and I caught more of the foreshadowing and hints. I almost teared up during my second watch.
2. The first theater I watched at had not as good speakers giving out a low pitch noise that took my attention away a few times. The sound quality at the second theater was great.
3. The audience was bigger but respectable (until they talked over the credits) and it was nice to experience people enjoying the movie.

Saw it 3 times in Shinjuku when it first came out, everyone should go watch this in theaters at least once. Just the visuals alone are worth seeing on the big screen, it's Shinkai's best work by far from a visual standpoint. And for the love of god don't watch the shitty chinese rip version, at least wait for BD. I wish I could see it for the first time again, I hadn't heard anything about it yet and just went to see it cause I liked Garden of Words, and it totally blew me away cause I had minimal hype going in. And then no one on /a/ could talk about it with me cause it came out like 3 days ago and barely anyone else had seen it. Same thing with Hana and Alice Satsujin Jiken, but still no one will watch that cause >muh rotoscoping, at least this one caught on.

I can't answer why you didn't feel anything because I don't know you. People react to things differently.

But "popular" movies are designed to elicit maximum reaction from the largest possible base, it's a simple matter of utilitarianism.

That might mean that people who were moved by previous works designed to appeal to a different audience aren't as thrilled.

But looking at this thread, the reviews that have been written basically across the globe, and the sales figures, I think it's pretty clear that it's impossible to say that it doesn't make anyone feel anything. It makes lots of people feel things. Quite strongly at that.

It just didn't make *you* and some others feel anything, but you aren't everyone. And I'm not sure how much of a concerted effort you're making to actually try to understand why *other* people reacted positively to it before just shitting on it reflexively because it didn't appeal to *you.* It seems like a shortage of metacognition, of the ability to comprehend that others see things differently and just leave it at that, even if you don't personally understand their view (just as I don't profess to understand yours).

That you're mentioning his other works as "more critically acclaimed" is perhaps an indication of this, as there is no indication that any of his previous works are in general rated any better than KNN overall by any useful metrics. But because they appeal more to you, you assume they're more-liked by everyone else, or at least everyone else with your notion of "good taste."

Can't say I've ever seen someone say Ookami to Koushinryou, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. Most people don't use Shingeki no Kyojin, they use Attack on Titan (even though it doesn't really make sense). No one says JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken, they say JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

That was certainly my assumption.

On the other hand, if she was in fact the teacher in Your Name, then she must have left Tokyo immediately afterward which means they got together in late 2016 when she moved back, of course.

In any case, the overall quality of Garden demonstrates that Shinkai was starting to develop the competencies he put to good use in Your Name back then.
>>
>>155956808
Ookami to Koushinryou was 2008, Haruhi was 2006, Attack on Titan is a part of the Japanese title, JoJo's has been around forever so I have no idea why you mentioned that. Almost elusively using Japanese titles for new things comes from this decade.

You are right. The thing I failed to mention was how the movie doesn't completely spell things out to you, the hints are thrown all over the place so you have to think or throw ideas around to get the bigger picture. After my first viewing, I thought the movie was just "okay" but I started thinking about it and reading the threads a lot in the next few days, that's what got me to buy a second ticket. The crappy sound quality just made me choose a different theater.

I kind of see his point in a way, I'm still not sure how I feel about the happy ending. You go into Shinkai expecting certain themes and storylines that he almost always uses, and a sad end. This one kind of came out of left field, you don't really expect this kind of action-heavy plot with humor and a happy ending if you know Shinkai's work from 5cm and Garden. I actually was pleasantly surprised by the different tone and unique story, you can only watch the same tragic love story so many times no matter how much I like Shinkai, but I could see how someone could be disappointed going in with the wrong expectations.

It's definitely standard. The only time /a/ uses English titles is if they're actually a part of the Japanese title in some form, like The World God Only Knows or Attack on Titan. The moving on and separating is kind of a common theme with his work, it's about transience and fate and things like that. He loves bittersweet endings. This ending would have been a total Shinkai ending if either they failed to save the town and Taki forgot about it and continued his life, maybe holding onto the string she gave him, or if they did save the town and are forced to be content that they are both happy and safe even if they will forget about each other. Having them meet at the end feels out of place for him, but I'm still not sure if I like it or not. My knee jerk reaction is to say I don't, but at the same time, I want them to be happy and I think I might have come out of it with less positive feelings if it did end on a downer.

He made a very good choice doing something different from what he typically did because it had a very good outcome. So, I don't think it's a bad thing if the ending feels out of place for him because sometimes you have to go out of your comfort zone to be more successful and Kimi no na wa is a good example of that.

Thats a fair point honestly. To add to this, there was an odd shot during mitsuhas basketball game where it focused on her boobs. At the time I thought it was just random fanservice, until an anon pointed out that taki doesnt ever wear a bra unless mitsuha put one on the night before.
The fact is, Shinkai was fairly consistent throughout. Im guessing not noticing these details have soured most of these naysayers first viewing.
>>
>>155957817
watched most of them already. I should fill in the gaps though.
>>
>>155957072

There's no doubt that most of the people watching Kimi no Na wa have never seen any of Shinkai's previous works, given how niche they've been in the past.

But to a degree, I'd argue that's a good thing: they went in without preconceived notions about what it should be "because it's a Shinkai film," they were just there to see a movie they'd heard was good. They weren't jaded.

And from the responses in these threads, it seems that a not-insignificant number of anons who have seen his previous works (at least a few of them) still rate Kimi no Na wa very highly, if not the highest out of his current repertoire.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to dislike the film or to find plot issues or animation shortcomings or whatever. Valid criticisms can (and have) been made. And no movie elicits the same response from every viewer.

I do however think it is more than a stretch to claim that it is objectively bad or not emotionally moving, and that was my point, really. Nothing more, nothing less, as they say.
>>
>>155957217
>>155957511

It isn't a romance story, it is a story about companionship and two people clinging to each other for comfort and to help each other get back on their feet disguised as a romance story. Neither of them feels like they fit in with their peers and they both feel alone and hopeless. They only meet during the rain, which conveys a gloomy and sad atmosphere, but it starts to feel comfy when they are together instead. But they are only together for the rainy season, both of them know it would be inappropriate to have a romantic relationship because of their age difference and student-teacher relationship. They stay together for the rainy season which symbolizes their hard times and help either other up, and then when it gets sunny they split apart again and she moves away. They love each other but not necessarily romantically or permanently. Shinkai's work is all about transience and people separating due to circumstance is a common theme for him, but here he is doing the reverse and showing two people coming together due to circumstance and need for companionship, knowing it won't be permanent. I have to admit it's been a while since I've seen it so I've forgotten a lot of the details. In the past I could have done a more cogent literary analysis with examples and stuff, I should watch it again I guess.

At this point, if he were in the US he could probably get as many years and as much money as he asked for.

But even with such a success in Japan, the strength of the seniority and parochialism is such that I expect senior executives will still treat him as an inexperienced upstart compared to the old and wizened Miyazaki, who has the seniority to get whatever he wants and to come out of retirement whenever he feels and immediately secure funding.

I loved his previous work and I loved Kimi no na wa even more, I think it's his best and it was a pleasant surprise. So I don't mean to imply that that is a good thing, rather that could be a reason why someone might take issue with it or not feel the things they were expecting to feel. The guy might just not like that kind of story and was expecting a tragic romance drama instead or something. Saying it is not emotionally moving is absurd considering its immense and unprecedented success with every demographic, but at the same time expectations can really color your view of something and I still have my misgivings about the ending, something about it just doesn't feel "right" with the rest of the film and I can't put my finger on it, even if I feel like it would have been needlessly cruel to not have them meet again.

I mean. how likely even is it that you would meet someone you are looking for at random in Tokyo? I mean I have never seen anyone here by accident except for right outside my apartment or an area we both frequent already. I think it seems unlikely that you could even see someone on a different train like that you are looking for, and then find them when you get off and go back? I mean shit it's hard to meet someone you plan to meet sometimes with so many people around. Maybe that's why I have a problem with it, it's kind of contrived. I still loved the movie overall though, that is the one part I am still 50/50 on.

I honestly feel really bad for him, the stress must be unbelievable. I mean there is no way in a million years, even if his next film is a masterpiece, that he could replicate this level of success or follow this up with anything that could meet the type of expectations and hype he already has on his shoulders. On top of it, he basically can do anything he wants now which is even more pressure in a way, since constraints lead to creativity, now he's gotta be driving himself crazy going through a million possible ideas and whatever he suggests, no one is going to tell him they don't think it's viable. Plus the guy has been making more or less the same movie for like a decade now, with various tweaks and refinements each time. I don't know if he could get away with it again after this one was kind of the climax of it all.
>>
>>155958242
> I mean. how likely even is it that you would meet someone you are looking for at random in Tokyo?

I'd like to believe it wasn't quite at random. Taki seems to have stayed in the same area, if not the same apartment, as evidenced by the train station. Mitsuha probably has some sort of residual memory of the time she was taki. Also shinkai said she was a designer, which relates to the same companies taki would have applied for as an architect.

>>
>>155958242

Over the span of 8 years, it's obviously not likely but it's not necessarily unlikely either.

I suppose it's probably worth considering that Taki at least frequents that train often, and by that point in her life I'd bet Mitsuha's settled into some kind of routine as well that probably sees her taking fairly regular routes through the city. All of those train lines and locations depicted are in extremely busy areas anyway that sooner or later any Tokyoite would end up using.

So now the likelihood is reduced from meeting anywhere in Tokyo to simply crossing paths at the right time. Still not likely, but the scope has been narrowed significantly.

And lastly, it's also clear that they at least sort of have some connection to the places they visited, so it's possible they started unconsciously spending more and more time in these areas.

I don't personally feel it's too much of a stretch (once you've already gotten through the MUSUBI stuff) but I come from a city where people tend to regularly bump into each other anyway (and it's a city of over a million people) so it may just be that I'm more accustomed to it than others.

>>
>>155958542
Probably, but working for Jump and working for any random monthly publication are incredibly different to start with. I think Berserk moved magazines at some point and Miura probably got a nice deal.
>>
>>155958589

I was almost dragged to see it; some friends were seeing it but I was exhausted from working 18 hours the previous day and knew I didn't really like romance/drama films. And I knew Shinkai had a reputation for arthouse stuff, which I'm not too fond of.

And that all probably contributed to how much I liked it the first time. I liked it but didn't think much of it until the next day, at which point I realized I was still thinking about it. And the day after. And now almost exactly a week later, after having seen it again as well.

Probably. It would be a sensation you would never have had before that a male would be used to.

Also, potential morning wood.

This is why I'm worried that his next film will be a disaster.

He has all that pressure on him to make a masterpiece. On top of that, since they're timing the release to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics, they're going to try and market the hell out of whatever he makes as an example of Japanese culture to the world. Add on to all of this that his film will be competing directly with Hosoda and possibly even Miyazaki since they're also planning on releasing something that summer.
>>
>>155958790
Maybe, but from his more recent videos, he seems pretty happy about the work.

https://twitter.com/FUNimation/status/853013164920897536

Plus, there will be lots of masters working with him as well. Animation is a team project!

This is clearly what he is worried about as well.
I think he just wants to tell his type of stories. He doesn't want to worry about meeting a benchmark and Kimi no Na wa has set a high bar.

This poor fuck, he picked the worst time to put out a masterpiece. I kind of want to give him a hug. ;~;7

Honestly I think if he is able to just make it and disregard trying to top Kimi no na wa he will be able to make something good, even if it doesn't have the same mainstream appeal. I haven't been disappointed with any of his films yet, so it's nice to see him with unlimited money and koreans to animate whatever he wants beautifully. The key is probably to go in a totally different direction with it so it can't be compared directly to KnNw.

Kimi no Na Wa was a passion project in the works for 5 years, during which he made other movies. It's an impassioned plea and a rejection of the beliefs he's held onto for a long time, and made movies like 5cm/s about. This is a film with a crapload of love put into it, and I doubt Shinkai can build up that amount of investment by 2020.
>>
>>155958959
It's not covered in that LN. That LN starts when the body swapping has happened a few times already.

Just noticed in the movie LN that Taki dreams about the time he met Mitsuha when he was in Junior High on the morning he first wakes up in Mitsuha's body. Is that shown in the film? (Forgot all about it by the time I got to the end of the LN where it tells you about her going to Tokyo to meet him of course.)

iirc he gains her memories at one point (as they are drawn closer together or something) and that's how he knows it's handled differently in the film

Yes, it's shown.

I'm more bothered by the fact that Yotsuha didn't change clothes for this day, and the next day.

>>
What do you guys think of the plot of Shinkai's next movie?
>>
>>155960019
Shinkai's probably going to go into hibernation for another decade after blowing his creative load on this one.
>>
>>155959908
Nothing. I really shouldn't watch this stuff, it always makes me feel empty and hopeless because I want to be part of those worlds and spend time with the characters. Mitsuha is waifu for laifu, but I almost just want to be her, her life seems so exciting and like, warm or something. I can't really even describe the feeling I get from this shit, but there is just this certain type of shows that always do it to me and they don't have that much in common other than just a vague feeling I can't explain.
>>
>>155960080
it's the feeling that what you've just watched will probably stick with you for the rest of your life.
>>
One thing I just noticed when skimming through scans of the movie booklet is that when Taki and Mitsuha are writing "Aho/Baka" on their faces, they seem to be doing it as themselves and not in each other's bodies, since Mitsuha has her hair properly tied up with her cord rather than in a simple ponytail as Taki does it.

I find this a bit puzzling, since anyone who sees it is going to presume they wrote it themselves, so why write it? It's not a prank on the other party. Unless by that point the presumption is that they know well enough when they're going to switch to leave "gifts" for the other ahead of time.
>>
I'm going to drink the mush she chewed
>>
>>155960169
It's not a prank, it's their way of communication.
They're calling one another dumb.
>>
>>155960080

I know that feeling.

I don't even want Mitsuha as a GF or anything, I just sort of want to see more of what she's up to, where her life's going. And the lives of her friends. Just to sit back and watch the comfiness of it all.

And maybe Taki as well to a lesser extent, but I already understand a bit more of the city lifestyle so it's not as interesting to me.
>>
>>155960212

Yes but normally they write on the other's body while they're swapped, not when they're in *their own* body.
>>
>>155960120
Not necessarily, probably 3/5 of my all time favorite anime didn't give me the same feeling, it's different. I genuinely don't know how to describe it. Right now Little Witch Academia is giving me the same feeling and it's a totally different type of series and even though it's good, it's not nearly on the level of Kimi no Na wa
>>
>>155960049
Shinkai seems to like some difficult love stories, how about a russian female soldier and a german soldier(both teens) fell inlove with each other in the battlefield then the german helps her get back to russia, kind of love story
>>
>mfw they subtitle onee-chan as mitsuha
Come on, you could definitely use Sis there.
>>
>>155960246
I love the city, I think that is why I relate to her so well. Just her excitement and joy about Tokyo is so comfy somehow. Like it is somehow, I don't know, hopeful. She can go and get ice cream and take the trains and its all really normal stuff but it feels, soothing somehow? I genuinely can't even begin to articulate it, none of that is quite right.
>>
>>155959861
Oh man, if there were sketches for the backgrounds like itomori lake, or the comet, I would legit spend thousands of dollars on that.

>>155960314
Because nobody says sis in real life, you just use their first name.
>>
>>155960314
I always hate when people put Sis in the subs, no one in english says that and it just sounds weird and kinda uncomfortable. Literal translation isn't always the best, the feeling of calling eachother by name is close to the feeling of what they mean when the call each other onee-san, that is just what you call your older sister, it is as natural for them as calling her by name for us. Sis is abnormal.

Some stores, like Daiso, play four or five recent popular songs on repeat all day, so that's where I heard it half the times.

You don't get the same sense of desperation from Taki in the move that you get in the LN. It's pretty gripping during the search period in the LN.

Are, that's not right.

Mitsuha went to Tokyo the day before the comet hit, got her hair cut that night, then when she meets Tessie and Sayaka the next night they are surprised by her hair. But when Taki enters her body the day the comet hits and goes to school they are surprised by her hair.

Did she not go to school on the day the comet hit in the original timeline? I don't remember any sign of that in the LN.

In the LN there's no dialog when they meet. Even the Kimi no Namae wa isn't in brackets.

When they pass on the steps they both turn around at the same time. I'd say the impact of the meeting is better in the LN because in the movie it seems more like both of them are too embarrassed talk and it was Taki mustering the courage but the LN makes it clear they both felt like they had finally meet the person they were waiting for.
>>
Okadera also didn't give that "you'll someday find happiness" line in the LN. That felt kinda out of place, not sure why she was so involved in his love life if they hadn't met in ages.
Also, the movie skipped them going to the Italian restaurant they worked at.
